the best uni for what?
what is good for medicine may not be good for design for example

Well, you cannot easily compare Unis like LSE and Imperial, as their only common subject is Maths (if I am not mistaken)
What's the point of this thread.... it all depends on the cuorse. The general reputation is useless.

How are people meant to "vote" for this? They'd obviously choose the one they want to go to/been to, and for those people who aren't going to any of them, exactly what criteria are we basing the votes on? How often we've heard the name?

Out of these, LSE is probably the best known internationally.
Is that the art specialist equivalent of Imperial?

LSE!

Can you imagine how good the University of London would be if it were all one uni? You could make an argument that it would be on a par with Oxbridge.

Whether that's true depends what criteria you're using to assess "goodness". The universities in London aren't rich enough to provide the tutorial/supervisions systems that Oxford and Cambridge have, and that wouldn't change were they to merge to form a single entity. The library would not suddenly become a copyright library, entitled to every book published in the United Kingdom, either. On the other hand, they'd have a formidable portfolio of property in London and have a very large cohort of world-leading academic staff.

I don't know much about it but every time I look at subject tables there is always at least one uni from London in the top 2 or 3. I was just thinking if that was always the same uni it would be a very good uni.

The 3rd best university in the UK is a toss up amongst the ff unis:

Imperial, LSE, UCL, Warwick, Durham, Bristol, St. Andrews and Edinburgh.

So, depending on your personal taste, preference, location, etc., all unis mentioned above could very well be the 3rd best uni in the UK.
I am an English student, so the strength of Imperial and LSE are irrelevant. This question is too ambiguous to be answered. Departments within uni's vary dramatically in standard which mean that no one institution can be properly compared to another. It's like comparing Apples with Oranges. Durham is great for English, but its engineering courses are less desirable.

In my opinion, there is Oxbridge, and then one needs to look at specific departments within a uni to get a better idea of its strengths.

However, what I have said is refutable, when considering courses like Dentistry or Vet Med.
:eek4: How come London Met is not on the poll list!?!!?!? :eek4:
