Believe it or not, you don't actually need a new (or any) laptop for a CS course (as your university will have department computers, though a laptop can be handy).
Although you may plausibly want it for playing games...which isn't quite your course.

I know this isn't a popular opinion so just...think about it.

I think CS students should get govt grants for new computers so that we can play the latest video games or watch porn...in high resolution. Haven't we worked hard enough for it?
Hey! Does anyone do Project Euler here? If so, has anyone done problem 18? I am curious as to how anyone has approached it, I have been thinking Dijkstra's algorithm for longest path, but I think I am over complicating it. :s-smilie:

Dynamic programming is probably the way to go I think...

Yes dynamic programming. For that one knowing the method you can do it in Excel (or you can just brute force since it's not that big), but for Problem 67 you'll need to write out the actual program with the right method. The same method works for both.

I'm Laura and I am a Year 12 student applying for Computer Science 2013 entry~
Computer Science wasn't offered in my school but it's a subject I have self-learnt and I have just started an online course on edx.org (if you haven't heard of this already, go on the website!! Do it!! Especially if you want to do compsci!). Looking forward to going to uni and studying the subject so much. :biggrin:

Hope I can meet some others applying for/studying Computer Science or just anyone who has an interest!!! :smile:

Haha problems people have been posting earlier in the thread are intimidating! :P Spose they're not designed to be figured out instantly though haha! I rant about my problem solving and maths skills in my PS but I feel I should practice them a bit.. xD

Where are you thinking of applying too?
Year 13 female applying for CompSci degree in September 2013. I was initially a Physics applicant, but after some serious thinking and considerations about both my future and my personal interests, i've decided to choose CompSci.
I'm incredibly glad that I have, because learning about programming has become one of my main interests.
At present I am teaching myself C++, as well as learning Python through an online uni course. I'm really enjoying it, and can't wait to put my knowledge to use.
Beyond uni, I would love to design and build physics engines for video games, as I love both physics and uh, video games!

I'm a massive nerd and enjoy D&D / Magic: The Gathering, and tomorrow i'm going to an all-night Marvel Avengers movie marathon at the IMAX. Greetings. :smile:

What A-Levels are you two taking?
I'm studying Maths, Further Maths and Physics at A2, with Chemistry at AS. I got AAAA and am aiming for A*AA this year. :smile:

hiya everyone, i was wondering if further maths is necessary for comp sci at uni?
i'm in year 12 and im not taking further maths, was that a mistake? i'm a bit worried about it. :tongue:

It's definitely not required (it can't be since not all schools offer it) but most top unis would prefer you to have f.maths as opposed to anything else (even physics) so you might want to consider changing to it if you can (e.g. Imperial calls f.maths "highly recommended", most Cambridge colleges prefer applicants to have f.maths)

You don't need to worry massively if you don't have it, though. Hope this helps :smile:

I was thinking about the British Informatics Olympiad, but decided against it due to not having a spare minute to work for it :s-smilie: although looks like good fun!

What do you mean 'Even physics'. A-level Physics is VERY distant from any form of computer science. After all computer science is just a branch of maths. Don't worry about physics. Further maths is Vital if you have the opportunity to take it.

What?

I would agree (and so would the person you quote) that F.Maths is much more important than Physics A-level for CS applicants, but it is far from useless. Not least because the aptitude required to do well at one correlates very well with the aptitude needed to do well in the other.
