    I'm not a toy historian, but I believe that they were marketed as "an oracle to explore the subconscious" or something. Earlier versions before Parker Brothers (ie not sold as a board game) were certainly sold as novelties and did mention "fun", "amusement" and certainly implied it was a party trick. There was no explicit or implicit connection with the occult or anything outside the subconscious of the players.

    It's called an "ideomotor response" i.e. bull****. However, the paranoia has driven some people literally mad so best avoided.
