University Packing - How Much Is Too Much?
Hey guys,
So I've been organizing all my belongings that I'm taking to university, but it all seems to be quite a lot!
Most of the kitchen things are essentials (I used TSR's list for guidance!), but do you think it's a bit much to take my sodastream and my slow cooker?
Also, what are everyone's thoughts on taking Xbox's?
I've also received a monitor so I can dual screen to help me with my work.
I have an iPod dock that I bought ages ago... it's not very big - about A4 in length? Would it be a good idea to bring that? I thought it would be a good conversation starter thing.
Basically ... how much are you guys taking in total? I don't want my Dad to turn up (he's driving me from my Mum's) and tell me to not bring all my stuff!
Thanks

Might even hire a removal van
I can see myself taking speakers, so you taking a dock probably isn't unreasonable.
PACK ALL THE THINGS!

Re: University Packing - How Much Is Too Much?
Take the sodastream and slow cooker if you think you'll use them! My mum offered to give me hers while I'm away but I really do not want to have ANOTHER thing to squeeze into the car. I read a handy tip on this site: anything you don't use before Christmas, take it back home with you to make it easier when you move your stuff back home.
Loads of people take their consoles so no worries about that either!
As for microwaves' comment about playing IRL Tetris, I have played IRL Tetris WITHIN the boxes. I've packed an incredible amount in a really crafty manner into my boxes. I'm actually quite proud of it. I'll also be playing Tetris with the boxes themselves just because I have to get it into a smallish car rather than a small van or anything. Get all of the fun out of such a stressful situation. -
Re: University Packing - How Much Is Too Much? All gadgets, like xbox, ipod, ipad, etc are totally useful and worth taking. Avoid taking too many heavy things unless you have parental transport available. Take some nice things that you will miss. Little food treats and one or two small inexpensive luxuries. Be careful with things that are easily stolen though.(Original post by Gemma345)

Re: University Packing - How Much Is Too Much?
ahaaa a soda stream, that made me laugh :P at least your prepared for every situation included a national fizzy drink shortage! I'm taking wayy to much stuff too, tea pot, coffee pot thing, toastie maker etc. I have so much stuff it doesn't all fit in the car, a couple of boxes are filled with a duvet, pillows and bedding so I'm hoping they don't count haha!

Re: University Packing - How Much Is Too Much?
Personally I'd rather take too much than not enough because I couldn't bear to leave something behind and then find I want/need it whereas I could live with having a load of stuff I don't even use shoved in the corner. If you're worried about your Dad saying it's too much then what I would do is tell (or show if possible) him the size of the bags/boxes you are using to pack and ask how many he'll be able to fit in his car. Then he will tell you how many and you just need to make sure that is how much stuff you have ready for when he picks you up. Alternatively you could pack the stuff in the order of how badly you want to take it, then put stuff into the car until it's full and anything left will be things you are not as bothered about. However I would go for the first option really if at all possible as that way you can pack similar items together and are likely to get more into the bags/boxes.

Re: University Packing - How Much Is Too Much?I'm doing this. I wish we hadn't got rid of the micra, that thing WAS the TARDIS.(Original post by LaurenPhilippa)
Hah, let's put it this way...
When you're in my position, wishing your mum's trusty blue Corsa will turn into a TARDIS for move day....you know you've got too much stuff.

Re: University Packing - How Much Is Too Much?i second all of this(Original post by sliceofcake)

i think ive got wayyy too much to take too, so when i get there i might send stuff back home with dad, but don't worry there will always be someone with more stuff than you.. someone on here told me that! i have been playing tetris within boxes.. i think if you pack nd then repack a box you can fit more in on the second attempt! -
Re: University Packing - How Much Is Too Much?
too much is when people you know see you from their windows as you leave (at the end of the year), and text you saying "WOW you have a lot of stuff".
true story x 3
srsly though, take a bunch and you can always take some back home during weekends back/holidays etc, it's nice to know you have stuff to hand (e.g. a jacket to match every possible permutation of your clothes)
slow cooker could be useful if you're a motivated kinda gal.
take your music system for sure and keep it in your flat's kitchen or whatever

Re: University Packing - How Much Is Too Much?
Put what you need in first, then keep adding extra stuff until no more space! That's what am planning anyway..
Btw, do many people bring weights with them to their Uni room? Will be getting a gym membership but for those days I cba goin down to gym was thinking to bring my weights from home with me.. There nothing big, just a barbell and two dumbbells and 50kg to add onto them so won't take up much room? Anyone on here brought some with them before or know someone who was? -
Re: University Packing - How Much Is Too Much?Alternatively, you could've hired a van.(Original post by KKKKatie)
my dad went and bought a Jeep for 300 quid on ebay especially for the occaision- it may fall to bits half way down the M1 but at least all my junk will be in it! -
Re: University Packing - How Much Is Too Much?
Too much is when you turn up at the house with a car load and the house mate's look of shock as you keep bringing more stuff in and he doesn't realise that there's another car load to come as well. To be fair I'm a girl so half of it was clothes and shoes etc. This was third year rather than first year, you'd think I'd realised by that point but I was alright in freshers it just got worse not better.
I've also received a monitor so I can dual screen to help me with my work.
I can see myself taking speakers, so you taking a dock probably isn't unreasonable.
