Preferred degree subject?
Hi,
All other things being equal, would a candidate with a 2:1 degree in a financial/business oriented subject (economics, finance, maths, perhaps even PPE) be at an advantage against a candidate with a degree in humanities/arts?
I ask because i'm currently surveying the opportunities open to me post-graduation (i'll be starting year 1 tomorrow), and i'm concerned that my degree in English will be a barrier to entry into the financial sectors, regardless of any relevant experience I may be able to demonstrate.
Thanks

Re: Preferred degree subject?
Hi there,
In Ernst & Young we have graduates who have taken a range of different subjects at Degree level. For example, we have graduates who have taken Geography, Mathematics, Biology and Structual Engineering.
I think it's quite common to think that because you want a job in the financial sector, you need a degree that it financially related. However this isn't the case. Graduates who have done accounting at university may have the upper hand to begin with; however all our graduates are trained so that they all have the same knowledge and understanding.
Taking English at university will give you skills that someone who takes Accounting doesn't have, therefore it's not a barrier to entry.
Hope this helps.
