    Laptop for uni
Hey, I am going to be starting uni soon where I'll be studying accounting and finance and I needed a laptop. This will be my first laptop as I've always used a desktop before. I'll mainly be using it for uni work, watching youtube videos, streaming, light gaming and generally just browsing the internet. I need a laptop that will last me the full 4 years at uni and also needs to be portable as I'll be travelling now and again. My budget is around £1000. Thanks

Just casual games like on miniclip or something and Ive had a look at that one but am unsure on whether it'll last me the 4 years at uni.

You probably don't need a laptop and you certainly don't need to spend that much. Reduce the budget to £400-500 and get a solid desktop.

I would have but am gonna be travelling from time to time so I cant move the desktop from one place to another without difficulty so I think a laptop would be better for me.

No need to spend £1000, that's completely outrageous. Just take a look here http://www.novatech.co.uk/laptop/all/ and buy one for up to £600, you really don't need any more (just look at the ones ~£1000 and you'll realise those PCs are powerful enough to run a server for 20 people simultaneously doing what you said you want to do.

Actually, the above ones are mega powerful and therefore quite thick - maybe find something lighter.

Any laptop will last 4 years if you don't physically break it. Computers don't just slow down - you might clog things up on the system and stuff, but a quick hard drive reset and reinstall will leave you with rapid speed once more.

Okay thanks, I'll consider your advice when I buy one.

I recommend you to choose one of the Sony Vaio laptops. They just great! They are made from good quality materials, has good specs and they are well designed. I have mine for 3 years now and I will recommend it to everyone! Ventilation on this laptop is great and they don't get over heated ( my friend have HP and they get extremely warm).

    Travelling where?
Well basically I'm living in uni accommodation right now so during the holidays I'm gonna be going back home. I know this will sound weird but according to my uni accommodation agreement I'll need to empty my room during the holidays. So along with my luggage I don't want the pain of carrying my desktop as well while I'm travelling by train. It's better if I just get a laptop which will be less hassle

If its Miniclip pretty much anything can play it with integrated graphics even Sims, you need more intense graphics......but have a look at a user on tsr's review on the link i gave before, quite a few people have bought, though overkill for your needs, so you can search for a Lenovo G580 on Amazon they also come with a few choices of spec.http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show...9#post39497899

Im guessing you didnt read my post properly. Well I'll explain, if I said that I was travelling by train to get from uni to home obviously I'm gonna be travelling by train to get from home to uni. And dont you think if a desktop was better suited to me than I would not have started this trend in the first place.

I think people stress way too much when they are buying a computer-most new laptops are sufficient for all you want to do. Just go into PC world, get a laptop for about 500 quid and spend the rest at uni.

if you've got £1000 get an apple.

(I'm sure I'll get negged for this, but they are worth the money)
Yeah I know there good and all but I think after buying the laptop and the microsoft package I'll probably run over the £1000 budget

yeah your probably right but my brother had a laptop a couple years ago and he was playing runescape or something and the laptop just died. So I dont want to buy a laptop in a rush and then it dies on me too. Plus I doubt I'll be buying it from PC world cause apparently their customer service is worse than anyone else. When I do buy it I'll probably get it from john lewis or something.

Are you sure? The last time I checked the laptop was around £950 or something and than on top of that you have to buy the mac version of microsoft which will defiantly run over £1000
