Do Muslims feel marginalised in UK society???????????
I can only talk about what happens in the UK. Anyone who's worked in the public sector and who lives in a part of the country which has a significant proportion of Muslims living there will be able to tell you that 'the authorities' make considerable efforts to enable Muslim people to practise their faith as they wish to do. This includes things like enabling the building of mosques, creating Muslim cemeteries, Halal meat, encouraging Muslim faith schools, providing facilities at public buildings for prayers, having diversity training for public workers to help overcome erroneous pre-conceptions, providing female language teachers who will visit women in their homes to help them with English, working with Muslim communities to design appropriate school uniforms for Muslim girls, enabling Muslims to attend the Mosque during working hours, making allowances for fasting Muslims when planning the time of meetings, developing health education programmes to meet the needs of Muslim women etc etc.
I therefore feel frustrated when I hear that Muslims feel marginalised in UK society. I don't know what non-Muslims should be doing to overcome this. Please advise, and I am not being sarcastic here.Last edited by SHUTUPMAN; 15-09-2012 at 11:26. -
Re: I feel frustrated when I hear that Muslims feel marginalised in UK society.......
I agree. If a Christian westerner went to somewhere like Afghanistan or Iran, do you think they would get social workers to help integrate then into the community, or special support at school or protection to live their life the way they want to, even If it goes against the norm.
I think It's a pretty good deal here. -

Well a few of my Muslims friends have told me that all the 'pandering' the government gives them feels condescending more than anything else. They don't need the government to bend over backwards for them, they're not disabled or anything. To quote one of them 'It's as if the government think we'll blow up a bus anytime planning permission for a mosque is rejected'.

We could all convert to Islam and implement Sharia law? Maybe then they'll feel comfortable.
That's the way things are going at this rate

Re: I feel frustrated when I hear that Muslims feel marginalised in UK society.......Iran and Afghanistan are some of the most underdeveloped countries on the planet, they can't even look after their own people let alone make provisions for immigrants.(Original post by carpe diem 123)

The UK is an affluent developed country that has the resources to provide these types of services.
The majority of the Muslim countries in the world also happen to be very poor, however, in countries like the Emirates there are the exact same provisions available to Christians and other religious groups. Having visited Dubai on several occasions I have seen humungos churches, supermarkets that have special sections for non-Muslims that sell pig products and alcohol etc.
In the hotel we were staying at there was a prayer hall for the Christian workers, and every Sunday thousands of Christians used to come to worship in the hall provided, you could hear the singing and clapping even in your room!
I also saw many Christian schools and people wearing huge crosses around their necks, so they were free to practise their religion without limits.
Having visited many other Muslim countries I've seen similar services available. I think it depends largely on the country's resources and how large the immigrant group is. In the UK there is a large Muslim population, therefore it makes sense to have these services.
As for Muslims feeling marginalised maybe it's because they are one of if not the most deprived communities in this country. They live in the worst housing, have the highest level of unemployment... I could go on.
Many Muslims feel frustrated because despite having excellent degrees from top universities, because of the way they dress they can only find a job at a 7 - 11 if they are lucky. (I'm talking way before any of this economic crisis business, now it has just been exacerbated).
Dont forget being used as a scapegoat for just about EVERYTHING and ANYTHING!Last edited by Enigma55; 15-09-2012 at 13:01. -

Re: I feel frustrated when I hear that Muslims feel marginalised in UK society.......There is a reason why those countries are 3rd world and backwards. Free speech (however limited in the UK) enabling the sharing of ideas and other civil and political rights, protected most in the west have helped to create first world countries. We should therefore resist any changes which conflict with these traditional values.(Original post by fudgesundae)

Anyway on topic, I would feel marginalised if I didn't drink alcohol, pubs are the social institutions of Britain which they don't partake in. -
Re: I feel frustrated when I hear that Muslims feel marginalised in UK society.......Are you being serious? I have friends who don't drink and I seriously doubt they feel marginalised. I also disagree that pubs are the social institutions of Britain, people don't just hang around at pubs everyday anymore, and even so, you don't need to drink to go to the pub.(Original post by Band)
