Why bother with job applications?
I got offered a job in the pub last night, £15,000 a year, Mon-Fri 9to****in5. Might as well take it, he said he wouldn't even need a CV, would just offer it outright. Not bad considering the best fact on my CV is that I have 1000 points on a subway loyalty card. Job I have now I got through a mate, similar salary although I am waged so if I work less I earn less. It's **** money but it's more than enough to survive.
http://listentotaxman.com/index.php states I will get just over £1000 a month NET, which is fine. The job I'm at now I earn anywhere from £500-£1500 a month, although on average it's about £1000.
Another friend of mine offered me potential rent for £300pcm, in a fairly desirable area, although it would cost me a fair chunk in fuel (probably £150/month) to get to this job location as the two places are about 30 miles apart (slow roads, no motorway or dual carriageway). I don't have to take this though so could always find somewhere nearer to work. Still it would leave me with over £500 to eat and spend on ale.
I got my first "full time" job through a guy I'd worked for before and my second from an acquaintance who just needed some workers.
Sometimes it is who you know. -

What kind of jobs are you looking for? -
Re: Why bother with job applications? In that case, no idea (I was more thinking of something graduate; for which case there are quite a few recruitment agency type things).(Original post by *Thedreaming*)
just basic jobs (e.g retail, office job-school leaver).
I'd reccomend something like going into a busy store and offering to work for free for a week, and prove yourself that way (try a bunch, the first probably won't accept you). However I may not be the first person to think of that. -
Re: Why bother with job applications?I've gotten jobs both ways (and the latest one is probably a combination: knowing someone got me the interview, a strong cv and having done interviews before got me the job).(Original post by Slumpy)
FWIW, I got my job by applying, and knowing nobody. Didn't have much work experience either. -
Re: Why bother with job applications?
Literally all the jobs I've gotten (bar one where the boss quite after a month and left me jobless too anyways) have been through handing in CV's and filling out job applications. But these have all been waitressing/retail jobs rather than graduate-type jobs and placements, I hear they're all about who you know
