Most Important School Subject?
Just a thread to ask what you believe is the most important subject for pupils to learn in school. And if you could get rid of one subject, which would it be?
I think history is very important to learn, and it is my favourite subject, however, I'd have to say that science is the most important subject we can teach children. Any science- biology, chemistry or physics. We need more scientists, 12% of scientists in the world are British, and we need to continue to place a great importance on science in order to help our economy and solve more problems. -
Re: Most Important School Subject?
I don't think you can really single out one subject as the most important. I would say, maths, literacy, science, design and tech and IT could probably be regarded as the most important as they provide the general skills that are required in modern life, but all the subjects taught in schools serve a certain amount of importance (except for 'citizenship' which is nothing but nanny-statist crap).

Maths by a long shot. You need at least a C in maths (some ask for a B or A) to get into the majority of universities. Heck, even jobs in retail or fast food chains ask for GCSEs in maths and English nowadays. English is important too but not as important as maths.

Re: Most Important School Subject?
Surely has to be English. It must be nearly impossible to learn any subject in the UK without an ability to read in English to a reasonable level, even Maths books explain ideas using English.
However I am not convinced that having a pass in a school exam in English really signifies very much, whilst the study of literature etc is a worthy pursuit a person's ability to interpret literature is really not that important unless that happens to be their future interest or an avenue of future study.
So really my answer would be reading and writing rather than English itself as being the core areas of study. -

English. At its most basic our ability to communicate information is imo the most important. It is closely followed by maths. Third place isn't even on the horizon. Id love to say biology but tbh people can lead a pretty normal life whilst ignorant of the details of my subject.
