Thinking of doing a masters in Political Economy -Funding, accomodation and help
Hi everyone,
I am an undergrad Management student at the uni of Leicester just about to go into my third year. I have developed a keen interest in political economy throughout the year so much so that I really want to do a masters on the subject.
So far I have decided the best places to do it are Manchester and York (which would be PEP)-both of the course fees are around 5 grand. I've always wanted to go to Manchester so it makes sense for me to do it there!
Does anyone have any experience of these courses and in particular funding? I have a couple of thousand pound saved up and if my undergrad course has taught me anything I'll need over 6 grand to live for a year at uni! Not even including the 5 grand course fees.
I have looked at PCDLs and if worst comes to worst I will have to take one, I have a particular passion for political economy. However, anyone who has done a course at either of these two instituions, could you tell me if you received funding? Also how was the course? Where did you live, are the post grad halls any good?Accomodation is also important, is it just like first year halls?
Was the experience of moving back into halls just like first year halls?
Apologies for all the questions! -

Your best idea is to keep an eye out for a Studentship or Bursary.
1. Tell your current tutors etc that you are interested in doing postgrad - they hear about things you dont.
2. Keep looking at jobs.ac.uk - scroll down to the bottom and you will see 'Studentships'. These (obviously) change throughout the year so keep checking back, especially from Easter onwards.
3. Phone or email your 'chosen' Unis and tell them briefly that you are interested in any PG funding opportunities that might become available - could they bear you in mind etc. -

Thanks for your advice. My tutor said she would help me try to find funding but that was when she thought I wanted to be a lecturer (I kind of still do, and just not sure if I can commit to a phd) and I know funding for phds and 1+3 is more common. Funding for only masters seems to be harder to come by.
Do you know how common this funding is? It is literally just for my love of the subject not for any career advancement!
