RS HW - 'Do You Think That Smoking Should Be Banned?'
Basically, i have to write an evaluation for RS on whether you think smoking should be banned or not and must give reasons to back up my answer.
I'm struggling on what to write, so i need help or at least an example of how i would structure it and what to write about etc.
Thank you! -
Re: RS HW - 'Do You Think That Smoking Should Be Banned?'
I would suggest comparing it to other recreational drugs. There are no arguments to separate them. If you think that the illegal drugs should stay illegal, then it's hypocrisy to support continued legalisation of tobacco.
So your 'for' arguments for banning it could be any arguments that are used to have illegal drugs banned.
Your 'against' arguments for banning it could be able personal freedoms, and the fact that, when controlled for passive smoking, it affects the user rather than anyone else. -
Re: RS HW - 'Do You Think That Smoking Should Be Banned?'No it's not... They aren't identical so you don't need identical reasons for either legalising or banning them all. One example being, tobacco is already widespread, is socially acceptable and is available legally in every other country in the world. While the bans on other recreational drugs aren't 100% effective, it is simply impossible to get the same result by banning tobacco. It isn't all about health - otherwise alcohol would most probably be illegal as well.(Original post by lightburns)

Re: RS HW - 'Do You Think That Smoking Should Be Banned?'What is it about? Social norms. Essentially you have said "the difference between legal drugs and illegal drugs is that you can buy legal ones legally, and you can't buy illegal drugs legally".(Original post by callum9999)

What argument separates them, other than status quo? -
Re: RS HW - 'Do You Think That Smoking Should Be Banned?'I'm not going to get into this but again, the general public has a greater tolerance for people smoking than they do for people taking, for example, ecstasy.(Original post by lightburns)

Common sense dictates that the more socially acceptable something is, the harder it is to ban it (piracy for example). I'm not saying it's a great reason to have differing legal statuses, just refuting your claim that there are no reasons for it and that you're a hypocrite if you think there are. -

Individuals get serious diseases including lung cancer which puts strain on the NHS financially
Passive smoking is an worsening problem, this is bad for society
Arguments Against:
It is good for the economy, regardless of rising prices smokers still pay for cigarettes
It is the individuals right e.g. liberty and freedom -
Re: RS HW - 'Do You Think That Smoking Should Be Banned?'
I think smoking should be banned. (But good luck trying to get any government to listen as they make plenty of money from cigarette sales every year). I hate getting second hand smoke and people coughing their guts up all over me, it's kind of similar when you're sat next to someone on the bus or train and you get second hand music that you don't want to listen too.

Re: RS HW - 'Do You Think That Smoking Should Be Banned?'Yeah, thats true(Original post by Dmon1Unlimited)
No... why should the authorities determine what a guy can do with his own body?
fair enough if what you do affects other people but when its just you theyd might as well tell you what to wear, how to eat etc...
its ridiculous -
Re: RS HW - 'Do You Think That Smoking Should Be Banned?'Yup RS is Religious Studies(Original post by Hopple)
RS = religious studies? If so, I have no idea how to tie that into religion unless various texts prohibit it

Autonomism vs. Paternalism, or in a religious context, has god entrusted us all with free will or has god made us so that we should prevent people from harming themselves.
-
Re: RS HW - 'Do You Think That Smoking Should Be Banned?'Well in Christianity I know at least that your body is a temple and it is gods not your own, so smoking, gluttony any things to harm you body intentionally are a sin against god. ( I think it is likely that other religions will have the same kind of notion)(Original post by yazzieee)

Re: RS HW - 'Do You Think That Smoking Should Be Banned?'
Sometimes people don't know what is good for them. And as a result it is a huge drain on the state and the tax payer.
Ronald Reagan got it wrong. A bad government is not the solution, but a good one is. I'm fed up of my taxes paying for smoke related illnesses. Get your pleasure elsewhere...read a book, learn a foreign language, do something else.
If Cameron banned smoking, I'd vote Conservative in 2015.
