Freshers without drinking or clubbing? :O
Hi everyone, I'm starting chemistry in 2012 and I'm really exited about studying at Loughborough. I'm sure everyone else has gotten the welcome pack with the freshers DVD too and I am really nervous because all the events it talks about are for people who wanted to party and get drunk. I'm absolutely fine with people doing that but I just don't enjoy clubbing myself so is there anywhere i can go to find others like me? What kind of stuff can people like me get involved in? oh and I'm not living in halls either so I'm really worried about meeting people (but hopefully I can get a good night's sleep!). Thanx for reading and i hope everyone has a great freshers week!

    Hi there,

So far this is what I gather from Freshers. Go along, join a society of your choosing and just go with the flow. It is your choice whether to go go clubbing/drinking or not, just go to the events the society does that doesn't include what you don't like doing.

I'm starting in March '13 so I'm missing my uni's freshers week. I will also be staying at home and clubbing won't be on my agenda either, so I do understand about making friends, but you will be fine. Don't put too much energy into worrying.

    Good luck with your course

    Hey

I'm happy to see that someone else has the same worries as me. I'm just like you - don't have problem with others clubbing/drinking but personally prefer not to. I'm sure there will be plenty of other fun things to get involved with! As long as you're open minded and willing to get to know people, it shouldn't be a problem at all. Just join a society/sports team and get to know people. I'm expecting there to be some drinking pressure but I'm not planning to succumb to it. You know what they say: those who mind don't matter and those who matter won't mind...Good luck! :-)

Hi, well I go to Loughborough now in second year and I'm not into the drinking thing either !

In my freshers week there were a lot of drinking events in the evening but its completely your choice as to whether you go. There will be other freshers events during the day which don't involve drinking and then there's societies you can join.

Don't worry about meeting people, you'll meet people in lectures and societies too.

In my freshers I met one of my now closest uni friends who also doesn't drink. You definitely won't be the only non drinker at uni, though it can feel that way at times...

    Good luck with Loughborough!
If you want to talk we can do.

    xx

Loughborough freshers was completely fine for me last year. I found a group of people who didn't drink either from my halls and we just left the club early and ended up watching films, playing cards and having nice talks throughout freshers week. Unfortunately we didn't have much in common other than not drinking so it didn't hold on for much longer than freshers, but my point is that people who don't drink do exist on freshers.

Every hall has to organise at least one sober event, not just for those who don't drink but also since most freshers can't handle 12 consecutive nights of drinking. The union are helping with a (sober) roller disco this year and some comedy.

I don't know if it's changed much lately, but Loughborough has a pretty poor track history for out of hall freshers.

The students running freshers week for their halls are more concerned with their students - and a lot of the information on the nights out/events is given ad hoc at random gatherings. They really put 0 effort into the out of halls associates. If you do want to get involved with the 'official' freshers week of your hall, you'll have to go and make yourself known to the freshers reps and really hassle them to find out what's going on.

If you have any interests in societies, I'd recommend joining them ASAP and joining in with the stuff they do for freshers. (if you like computers or gaming really recommend comp soc ).

I'm not a fan of drinking either, especially not to excess, and will be looking to do plenty of other stuff during freshers!

So feel free to message me on here/find me on facebook, maybe we could meet up during freshers when everyone else seems to be clubbing!

When you say you don't like clubbing does that mean you don't like having a drink either? I'm not a huge fan of clubbing, but I do like a drink at a bar, or the pub.

    You're in Rigg-Rut too, right?

I'm not much of a drinker normally, but I don't mind having a few I'll definitely be going out the first couple nights and for the freshers ball (if I can get a ticket) but other than that I'll take it how it comes, and might stay in a fair bit. I'd just feel a bit awkward if everyone in my flat went out, and I ended up staying in on my own... lol.

Hey guys, I'm also a fresher in your same situation. I don't drink, but I don't mind going to clubs once in a while. Feel free to send me a message!

Also, look out for the freshers bazaar and join a society! My society was a big part of my life at Loughborough.
