I'm curious- please, explain your point further.

why?
Why did the chicken cross the rode. To suck on a 6 inch black chode.
I have no evidence to support this but I was always under the impression students were more left wing in previous generations.

As soon as these freshers get jobs they will cease to be very left wing.

People have hopes, naive dreams of the world, to think they can change people and everyone will all be happy and sing along and we'll love each other - frankly that is a load of bull.

Got it, anyone but a socialist is heartless.

And according to the majority on this site, the left are brainless. And anyone in between lacks courage.

oh aren't you the wise enlightened cynic, the man who has gone to dark places, sees the world for it's true cold austere reality.

The idea that those with left views see the world as a pink flowery garden of candyfloss is absurd. You sound like a grumpy git from the 60s. You should realise that the most cynical darkest writers had left views. The notion that those on the right see the world for what it really is is laughable! I find they are generally the ones with a certain ignorance as to what is actually going on.

I'm libertarian so you can just stop with your unresearched generalisations about someone you've never met, nor can gauge from a single sentence.

University is sort of like a upotian society for many - the chance to be merry, free, and bountifully obtain high brow knowledge of the world and its workings. Essentially, for many students, the "liberal" fantasy is just a phase until they experience the real world better and gain an understanding that it isn't all peaches and cream, and probably will never be. So yeah, to sum up: it's just a phase people go through while they are in an environment which makes them feel like they can "really make a difference". But of course you have your sincere die-hard lefties and whatnot, too.

I've never really heard that viewpoint, and I'd like too know what you believe the left wing haven't considered far enough. Hearing other people's views is interesting, I don't think I'll ever be able too fully understand the right unless they articulate their beliefs.

From my experience at University, the active lefties (of which I part of too, briefly) were virtually all happy-smiley-yoghurt-weaving-poo-eating hippies: who smoked copious amounts of ganj, cycled to the woods to have naked weekends, and just generally thought "life is beautiful". Of course you're probably right about the mainstream leftie population, but maybe not so much the University leftie population.

Didn't you do that for all the left students out there? 'silly little naive things who think they can change the world...'

Cannot understand this premise that the young are naive and the day they graduate from uni, they 'grow up', drop the socialist background and become die-hard tories. Also, people on this thread are presenting 'making a difference' as a bad thing?! It is indeed a sad fact that many people graduate, get a high paid job and then drop their previous political views due to their newfound selfish natures. If 'making a difference' involves shifting inequality and making life easier for people who struggle to cope with life then so be it. I'm fairly sure that when I graduate from University I'll still be adamant that I will never vote Tory in my life.

Actually I agree with you. That made me laugh. I'm probably not gonna join any of those groups next week. I imagine them to be full of insufferable chirpy do-gooders, who constantly take higher ground with their superior thinking (the rest of the population are poisonous leeches) , organic cloathing and drink fairtrade tea all day. I completely forgot about how overly lefty students can piss me off so much. Must take note not to become one. :zomg:

Do you blame them? Since coming into power the coalition has only punished students. Students believe that their generation can make positive changes. Students believe that someday political parties will fight for the good of the country and not themselves and the big corporations whose hands they are eating out of. Call it what you will- naivety, stupidity, bravery, "living up to stereotypes and trying to be hipsters huehuehue." It's a lot easier to see as a student when you're from the outside looking in.

Then they leave University and get a decent job then they soon realise that being a lefty doesn't benefit them personally so much as it benefits society as a whole. Maybe they'll move towards the centre, maybe even to the right of centre. Why would you want to pick up the tab for someone much poorer than yourself? Why should I pay for that waster in high school who now can't get a job with no qualifications? Why should I pay for students to have free education when I had to pay? Why would I support Government spending on alternative energy when it will just cost me? Why should I pay for a living wage when I want the new....? What have they done to deserve it? Humans are naturally selfish beings. Who's to say that I won't be the same way when I grow up? I'm not taking the moral high ground here.

I don't see why you're being such a douche about it OP. Use your brain.

No........

'People' isn't every single leftist in the world, nor is it every single person in the world. Its a mere word in a sentence - I didn't want to specify or I'd have people like you barking at me for stereotyping. Though somehow you seem to have the notion that I'm doing the latter.

Surely that applies to whether you've made it in a decent paying job, and/or acquired a decent amount of wealth.

A 40 year old living off benefits in a council flat is unlikely to be a die hard conservative.

I think that was the point of the quote

Ive already decided to run for post and lead a party on one promise: Bankrupt the generation that ruined ours.

But you gave your response to a question regarding a very specific group of people, so I didn't think of your response in a very general way. Anyway, what was the point again?.. I think you just annoyed me when you suggested they thought they could change the world and dance away into the sunset, but actually most of the actively left students I've met have been infuriating and acted superior so I don't know where I stand with this anymore. Blah.
would you prefer
