Does uni get any better after freshers week?
To be honest freshers week hasn't been that great, i've been out every night and had fun and met some pretty decent people but i'm yet to meet anyone with potential to become a true friend.

I met this dude and his flatmate during freshers and we've been all hanging out quite a bit, i've been invited to loads of parties but it still isn't that great.

I've never been drunk before so the whole of freshers and drinking has been new to me but i've taken it in my stride and joined in.

I'm just wondering if it gets any better, societies wise i've joined a few but i'm not the sporty type and i wasn't that keen on any of the societies i've joined. Also racially i am outnumbered massively which is quite difficult because i struggle to find simularities with alot of the people i've met.

Anyway so will it get any better?

It will get MUCH better. Fresher's Week is a bit of a weird thing; you're thrown into a melting pot with all sorts of people you've never met before and expected to just adapt, and that can be very hard. I wouldn't base your impressions of uni on Fresher's Week. Wait until classes start, until you get a bit more involved in societies and get to know the people you met in Fresher's a bit better THEN make a judgement. My fresher's was alright, but I didn't really start loving uni until a few weeks later. Hang in there!

I can imagine for someone that hasn't been drunk before that going 7 nights drinking will be very strange!

Freshers is the week where you make lots of friends but over the coming weeks/months/years you'll narrow this down to people who you're going to be actual friends with. My advice would be to keep your horizons broad and carry on taking things in your stride, as you say.

You'll meet people when your course actually starts!

Thanks ALOT, so do you suggest that i should join and attend the societies that i'm not too keen on to make friends?

Where did you make your friends btw, was it mostly from your course/freshers or societies?

Thanks alot, i just bought some ticket with the dude and his flatmate that i met during freshers to this concert, i'm not that big of a fan of the music although i do like some of it but i decided to buy the tickets as it is another way to meet people and another day i can get out and about the city instead of staying in.

The thing is, some of the people from the flat above just knocked on my door to see if anyone wanted to come up to chill. Now i would go and i've made the effort to go and chill with them all week but i feel really awkward in these situations.

They all drink and alot of the conversations is of them recounting various drunken nights in there hometowns which i cannot relate too. The conversation in general is not my type of thing, i try to get involved but there's only so much i can get involved with when the subject matter is something foreign to me.

Should i just go up to there flat where everyone from my block is and sociaize with them while feeling awkward and silent through most of the conversation or should i stay in my room? I really want to make an effort but out of the 30+ people in my block none of them have the same musical taste or interests as and none of them are from where i'm from. I could try and find a common ground but it's pretty difficult when 29 people are all on the same wavelength and i'm the only one off it uno.

Yeah, definitely get more involved with societies. Not doing that is one of the things I really regret from my first year.

Um, to be honest I met my friends during Fresher's so, um... drinking basically! But then I met them soberly and I liked them just as much. That worked for me but a lot of people I know made friends on their courses through tutorial groups etc. and through societies.
