Republican Party/Democratic Party ideologies

I have an essay question titled:
'The ideological differences between the Democratic and the Republican party are far greater than the differences within them. Discuss.'

I wasn't entirely how to approach this question..

So far, I have taken a political issue i.e. the role of governement and then contrasted the traditional Republican/Democrat ideologies on the issue and then counter this by highlighting the different stances taken by the factions within the parties on the issue and how dominant these factions are - with different examples.

I want to know if this is the correct approach and would appreciate any help or ideas
P.S My exam board is edexcel

Hi, I dunno if you still need help, but the differences are that republicans tend to work on a basis of free markets = free people, and guns god and social conservatism take a big part. Also things such as abortion, and contraceptives can be controversial. The democrat party is more interventionist, more regulatory when it comes to free markets, and is socially liberal
