Life in Brighton - What to do?
I've been in Brighton for a few weeks now and I was wondering about what nightlife there is available. I got tickets to one event but stupidly decided not to go and there is one tonight that I was toying with the idea of going but again deciding not to. I might be going to an event at The Haunt tomorrow night though.
I'm not that interested in going to nightclubs and all that. I would be quite happy to go to gigs and have a couple of drinks and have a decent night out. But it would be nice if they were cheap...
So if anyone has any ideas of a decent night out for someone like me in Brighton it would be much appreciated! -
Re: Life in Brighton - What to do?
I'm not actually at Brighton Uni, but before I went to university last week, I've lived there forever. Seriously, you venture into town and you'll find something to do... there's the Hobgoblin on London Road, which has a nice and chilled atmosphere and it's far enough away from the town that it's not stupidy busy at the weekends. In town, there's the Pavillion Tavern... affectionately known as the 'Pav Tav' (or the Chav Tav) which sells cheap drinks and is huuuuggge. There's slightly more dancey places that aren't clubs like The Mesmerist in the Laines, or the Green Door Store. For gigs, The Concorde 2 on the seafront is pretty amazing, they always have live gigs on... kinda like The Haunt. Unfortunately, Brighton is bloody stupidly expensive in most places... the cheapest place to go is The Pav Tav, the cheapest drink I think is like £2.90 not including shots. And if you just wanna chill and get a lunch in a nice quiet place, head down to 112 Church Street down by Pompoko, food in there is lush and the people lovely!
I hope this helped in someway! ^^ -
Re: Life in Brighton - What to do?
Have you joined any clubs or societies - they usual have social events attached , often meeting in the uni bar to start and then a club or something else (but you don't need to go on to the club) Some clubs are in the evening eg Kayaking at Sussex. Most people I know seemed to make friends through those rather than clubnights.
Good advice on pubs in the town from Hexify. The Komedia in town has a bar but runs different comedy clubs most nights and also some wacky cabaret evenings. The Duke of York's Cinema in Preston Circus is an old fashioned 1 screen cinema with plush chairs and has a good mix of indie and commercial films on and also late nighters. -

I've just started my second year at Sussex and now that I'm living in Brighton, I've found quite a few more decent events for live music. There's a few club nights defnitely worth checking out, one is called Late Night Lingerie at a place called sticky mike's which is right in the middle of town. They have pretty decent local bands on every couple of weeks. I THINK the next one of those is like a week on Friday.
Sticky Mike's is a good venue, Pav Tav and Komedia as well but my personal favourite is Green Door Store because it's under a train station and has that real dingy, intimate vibe! There's an awesome night that takes place every month called Drugs that always has at least 2 really quality bands and a really good atmosphere. Next one is this Friday the 19th. Green Door always has cool stuff going on really late as well.
Good bands you should look out for are The Valentines, The Witches, Amity, Plasticine, Glass Sines, The Mysterons, Tyrannosaurus Dead and the hundredth anniversary and there's loads more as well. -

The Blind Tiger near Grand Parade can also be pretty good.
Hipster central, but pretty good.

If you like 80s pop, the uni radio station are giving away a couple of free tickets to a Hazel O'Connor gig at Concorde2 tomorrow night. Maybe worth a shot?
