You can't really generalise about the readers of those magazines. I'm a generally academic person; I read all the time, I'm interested in politics, and so on. Yet sometimes I just want to relax and chill, and for babble, women's magazines are excellent. I don't think there's anything wrong with them. I'm certainly not obsessed with the way I look, for example; I skip through the make-up and fashion most of the time because it's just not me. I'm a very boyish girl. I'm in a long-term relationship, but if I wasn't, I wouldn't care..and that's partly because of the magazines emphasising the fact that it's okay to be single. There are articles about issues I wouldn't otherwise think about (identity theft, for example) and although I'm too young for it at the moment, a lot of career advice. Oh, and I learnt more about safe sex and respecting my wishes in that area from teen mags like Bliss than I did from anywhere else.

Yes, there is some rubbish, but that doesn't mean everyone soaks it all up. I read FHM for a laugh a fair bit, but that doesn't mean I'm gaining a stereotypical male viewpoint of sex, cars, and girls. You just can't generalise.
Because men can have women or gay men...but they cannot have lesbians... hence the attraction!!

What you cant have...you desire
I love Cosmopolitan  although i hate spendind three pounds twenty on a magazine, it seems like such a waste of money!!

This other article I was reading was talking about lesbianism is becoming more common among women even if they aren't Lesbians....some girls have started groups called LUG (Lesbians Until Graduation), just because of the closeness and security they feel in their relationships with their friends. However, they were talking about how its still not acceptable for guys. While are girls seeing lesbian sex as more appealing?

Very interesting, I always wonder if theres some sinister subplot in there about semi-pretending to be lesbian to attract male attention. On the other hand, I'm all for personal life choices and if being sexual with other women isn't necessarily for personal gains then who cares right? Its not my business. However, it might be diluting the whole idea of being a lesbian (making it seemingly all a desperate ploy to attract men), but thats another topic altogether.

I like the idea of modern sexuality becoming more fluid though, and this L.U.G. trend is an example of that happening. Tis cool.

Well the reason that men don't kiss etc is that hetrosexual male sexuality has a dominant aspect to it, two dominant parties just don't work - hence why if I went up and kissed a random bloke I'd probably get my head kicked in.

I think it's bizarre though to say there's a social stigma about being gay and no longer one about being a lesbian.

good analysis.

To the OP, I think that women know exactly what they want, and can give a women pleasure maybe some men can't. For example, something that will turn one woman on, will most probably turn another woman on too. Often men find it hard to turn a woman on really well, whereas this isn't often the case with lesbians.

Sounds like an interesting article. When I was at school I had a 2-year relationship with another girl but (and I'll probably get slated for saying this) I'm not bisexual. It's very easy to try to push me into that category because of it, but I genuinely don't look at girls in at all the same way as I look at guys and don't go round thinking about how attractive they are. It was a very comfortable relationship and we were good friends...we could also snuggle up and watch girly films together. Also, at the time, men and sex intimidated me quite a lot, so it felt a lot simpler and easier to explore sex/a relationship with another girl, since I was much more familiar with girls' bodies/minds. I went to an all-girls' school and, whilst I always found it easy to talk to guys, contemplating more terrified me. So it was just a nice way to find closeness and intimacy with someone.

Exactly what a gril said in the article...men were intimidating...and she knew how to relate to women. But im still not satisfied with the answers as to why men cant do the same thing. I mean there is ths new wave of 'undercover' husbands having affairs with other men to satisfy their sexual fantasies, but thats still not talked about a lot.

I wonder if it is more acceptable among women because women tend to be closer to their friends emotionally than men are anyway. (sorry if I'm being stereotypical, perfectly willing to be corrected) Women often share more etc so maybe sometimes it moves over into something more. However men socialise in different ways, which is less likely to move over into something else. Guy are less likely to give a male friend a big hug, take hold of their hand etc if they are upset which girls do just as friends, so (straight) guys r less likely to have closeness in the same way as girls.

It made sense in my head!

My english teacher had a theory that it was this difference in emotionality (think I just invented a word, woohoo) between men and women that accounts for the difference in suicide rates between men and women, especially younger people. I think in either Canada/USA the no 1 cause of death for men in their late teen/early 20s is suicide. His theory went that problems/depression occurred pretty evenly in males and females, but that women were more likely to talk to their friends about it, which would make them feel less like killing themselves (hopefully), but men would not, and therefore would feel more like killing themself as they had their problem + feelings of lonliness and isolation.

Obviously it doesn't always apply, but I think it could be quite a good explanation.
