Hi! Sorry relatively new to this and don't exactly know how this works yet! I've got an offer for YSJ and I'm very keen on making it my firm choice! Have you?

Congrats on your place at york! Did you have an interview on the 6th march?
Original post by Jmerritt
I had mine on the 6th and i had an email today saying due to the sheer number of applicants this year that i had been put in the hold category. They said they are still interested in my application but they are not making a decision at this point. Hope this helps

They did say they might put some people on hold. Does this mean that they are waiting to give out places until they have seen all applicants at the other interviews or would they have already given out places to people following the interview on the 6th?

...Did you want to put York as your firm or have you got other offers?

Wow that was a long wait, how do you feel the interview went?

I know!! I felt fairly happy afterwards...you never know though as it's so competitive!

How about you?

ABCC at higher in scotland (sort of the same as a levels) taking 3 highers this year too. did a weeks worth of work experience in a rotational placement in an nhs hospital couldnt get anymore work experience before i sent my app. also have been a lifeguard for a couple of months. I dont know what else i could do but get good grades this year :/

If Glasgow reject you, then you do of course have clearing as a back up option for this year - but you won't be able to be too fussy as to whether you go to a Scottish uni or English I'm afraid since most uni's are English. Have you considered Cumbria and Northumbria for physio - just over the border so not that much further.

I don't know how the highers relate to a levels as a whole, since you seem to be doing 7 in total (are the 3 this year advanced highers?), but you could strengthen your application with some modules from the OU in the mean time? Also consider private hospitals and clinics for work ex. And finally, GP surgeries have physios in the bigger surgeries now too, you may only get a day or so, but it's worth while trying.

Besides, some people get accepted with just a day or so as work experience, it's not always the amount of time you spend there shadowing, moreso the quality of your knowledge and understanding gained from the work experience. Choose case studies of patients you've seen and discuss them. I guess I was lucky as I went from being a Physio assistant into uni (Physio) without a problem, but I'd had just under 18 months worth of work to throw at my interviewer.

what unis did you apply to

Hey, I didn't get into uni my first time applying either. I didn't get the grades to meet the one offer I had, if you really want to do it I'd recommend resitting any exams you need to do and using the year to just get as much experience as you can as this is the main thing they look for. It also goes in your favour if they see its your second year applying as it shows you're committed! How come you only applied to 3?! Hope this helps!

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice on which course to apply for.

Basically I want to be a sports therapist..
From a career prospect point of view, do decent size clubs or clinics take sports therapists seriously in their own right compared to physios?

I know how competitive the physio courses are and I feel like I would be wasting my time applying when I know I want to go into the sports injury side of things and physio courses hardly cover that if not at all.

I just want to be practical about this knowing how much uni is going to set me back financially and I want to pick the right course for good job and career prospects.
Would I be able to find a job or even start my own business having trained as a sports therapist? Or do you think physios tend to get the jobs?

Thanks for your help.

Sam, as a 6year-qualified BSc(hons# Sports therapist I feel I have a good answer for you! As has been stated, Sports Therapy is still an un-protected titled profession meaning that in some circumstances employers are not willing to take on a 'general' Sports Therapist due to inconcistencies in training - ie someone doing a 3wk compared to 3 year course. In undergraduate training the main difference compared to a physiotherapy course(ours were run together a fair bit)would be that ST's are EXTREMELY SPECIFIC towards sport from day 1 - you do additional sports biomechanics, sports science, sports medicine, your rehab goes into minute detail of how to rehab an acl injury for a rugby prop v a football striker etc, you learn about use of many therapeutic modailities for treatment, pitch-side first aid(if provided on your course)which requires a faster and more precise MSK assessment. Whereas a Phyio would rehab those people the same way regardless of their level of sport and different movements/pressures required in their sport. Physio's do NOT SPECIALISE at all until you have done your Band 5 rotations in a hospital, and it is only then when you are able to specialise ie, your 5th year 'as a physio.' You also do an in-built level 4/5 Sports Massage course as part of the therapy course - Physio's do NOT train properly in massage! From my experience, where ST's lack a high level in cardio, neuro(population)understanding, they are far and above Physio's in Musculoskeletal aspects. It's certainly not 'the easier course' as many here are stating, it's just the more SPECIFIC course. Since graduating I have run my own very successful business, worked in prem & championship rugby and football as an assistant ST, been head therapist at commonwealth youth games, assistant therapist at commonwealth games, head therapist for a cricket team in ICC 2/1, head team therapist at island games, travelled with football teams internationally, currently head of a rugby medical department and work with elite national & Olympic athletes. HOWEVER, title regulation is limiting within sport, it just depends what level you wish to work to; I'm starting an MSc Physiotherapy course in September to aide this problem as many Sports Clubs(football & rugby championship level up)cannot take a ST due to legal insurance reasons even though we are more than capable, if not better prepared than Physio's(I've given some work exp before and not every one is better.) So, in a nut-shell I'd actually advise doing both a BSc and MSc but which way round is up to you, however Sports Therapy MSc's can take slightly less time. Look at what you'd enjoy more for 3 years, and then be fine doing another 18month in. PM me if you need any more info

my interview was on the 6th March and there are a couple more days of interviews left.

A couple of questions  ....when did you find out you had a place? and was your application put on hold at any point?

Finally, are you thinking of putting York as your firm?

This is true, when I was doing observational work experience; their massage was terrible, technique was non-existent and they had no methodical approach. At least if I get in to Physiotherapy this year, I'll have good massage skills, if nothing else.

On topic, Sports therapy would be a good option for me if I didn't get in; thanks for the information, it was very useful.
