I'm in the same year as you and would really like to apply, unfortunately don't have any connections to the company though! I'm also not entirely certain I would be categorised as 'under represented or under privileged'...

You should do it during the summer of year 1. This way you have some good experience before applying for whatever in year 2.

Besides, if you enjoyed your internship in year 1 and they liked you they will either give you an offer for when you graduate (if your connection is good enough) or at least offer you to do another internship the year after.

This said its lame to get jobs by connections
