Tourism?

So I really want to work in the tourism industry, but so far it's more of a 'dream' than concrete ideas .. Ideally, I would help with policy formulation so as to encourage/accommodate private tourism-oriented enterprises (so sort of public-/private- sector combination).

A related aspect of tourism i'm interested in is within the tourism business itself, more specifically the one that needs innovative/creative thinking, i.e. new places to take tourists to, non-mainstream types of events etc.

Anybody have any suggestions of where to start my search? I'm in the process of applying for internships for next year so the ability to do an intenrship there would definitely be a bonus. Also, is it absolutely necessary for me to have a degree in business or hospitality, or could I work with economics and economic policy?
