Colston Hall is not accepting undergrads for 2013-2014. No idea why.

How weird. Theyre probably doing the thing they did With winkwirth where they trial it as postgrad halls for a year.

Does anyone live in London and commute to Bristol, I am currently considering applying to do a masters in nutrition and was wondering if I needed to move to Bristol? I have a 5 year old daughter so it is a big decision to make. I would appreciate any advice.
Thanks

I think you'd seriously struggle, given that you'd be spending around 2 hours on the train, plus half an hour to get from Temple Meads to Uni, plus however, long it takes you to get to Paddington from your home. Plus there's all the financial costs involved.

I'd suggest that given the sheer amount of time involved in travelling, you'd struggle to see your daughter during the week anyway. If you were in uni 9-5 then you would have to be leaving the house around 6am and not returning until 8pm. The amount of money spent on train travel would outweigh the costs of finding a flat to rent in a decent area in Bristol (FYI whilst local secondaries aren't that great, primaries are much better). For that reason, you would be better off either (a) getting a Monday - Friday rental if there's someone in London who will be looking after your daughter, or (b) moving to Bristol with your daughter.

Yes, I think you are right, the journey time is a bit too long and the expense is another big issue:biggrin:

Email the department and check!

There isn't a similar thread at the moment, so I thought I'd create one. Just as it says on the title: ask a current Bristol student. My hope is that any prospective/new/etc. students can ask questions, and any current/past Bristol student can answer them!

Without further ado: ask away!

Are you a current Bristol student right? What course are you studying, if you don't mind me asking?

Yep, psychology and philosophy.

How do you (Bristol students) feel feedback and support from lecturers are?
Reply 49
Hi there,
I guess it depends on subject to be honest (I study English), but I've found that tutors are really helpful and supportive if you go to see them. I don't really speak to lecturers as we have quite a few in the department and they change all the time, but I've gone to see the tutors I have for tutorials and seminars a few times and they'll give you advice if you're struggling with the work. In terms of feedback, you tend to get your work back anonymously so if you want more than is given on your mark sheet (usually a paragraph or so about how you've done), then you can usually arrange to speak to your tutor during consultation hours, which they tend to have a couple of times a week.
Hope that helps/ is what you were asking about
=)

If there's anyone currently studying modern foreign languages at Bristol, how are you finding the quality of the course? Do you feel like you're being pushed the limits of your ability? Is the course more language-based, or literature-orientated? Do you feel like you also have the chance of taking up another language outside of your degree study?

I know, a ton of questions... But I just really wanted to know, even though I am visiting the uni this weekend...
Hi, so I went to a visit day today and was quite disappointed because the presentations were boring and we hardly got to see any of the university/its students so didn't really get a feel of what it would be like studying there. Someone please tell me how great it is because until today I was sure it would be my first choice and now I'm really confused as to where I want to go!

If there are any geography students at Bristol on here their input would be really useful but really I'd just like to hear anything about general university life at Bristol.

Hi, I'm sorry you had a bad experience of the visit day! I know a few geographers and they seem quite happy with the high standard of the course. In particular, there seem to be quite wide and interesting options for your dissertation! I'm not a geography student so I can't comment specifically on the course, though. Good luck!

Anyway if you have any specific questions about university life, I'm happy to answer them!

I did Biology - it was ok but I get much better feedback here at Leeds. Bristol is more about independent work, you only get one hand - in whereas at Leeds people will check big pieces of work for you before you hand it in. Exam feedback was also pretty much non-existent. The system for Bristol Biology is mainly give individual marks but general rather than personal feedback, which can be quite annoying.

3 of my friends are doing languages, in 4th year now after their year abroad, and they are really enjoying it. You can focus the course how you like depending on what your interests are with your module choices in the later years.

Bristol is great, yeah Leeds had a better nightlife etc (I'm there for a masters atm) but Bristol has so much going on, I wouldn't change where I went for my undergrad for the world, I really do miss it. I lived with a geographer who really enjoyed her course, and I took two Geography open units in first year which were really easy and fairly interesting so I recommend doing those :P
I really can't recommend it enough.

What are your other options?

I love Bristol as a city and know the nightlife and general place is amazing, but what are the people (generally of course) like at University Of Bristol? I love clubbing, going out, etc. and my cousin commented that I'd be more suited to UWE (lol). I hope no one takes offence to this I just want to know that I'm going somewhere where I can meet like minded people who like having a good time.
3. I've done a bit of research around this, but do you have any general comments on the English department?
Thank youuuu! :smile::smile:

Umm, people love going out! Definitely a party uni! As UWE is on the outskirts of the city it definitely isn't better for clubbing. There are tonnes of clubs near to Bristol uni, and most people go out lots! You will definitely not have a problem!

Again, I don't do geography (I do history  ) but general university life is really great!! It's just the perfect city to be a student in, as everything is walking distance, it's really pretty, and has some really cool areas (as well as all of Clifton the docks and Gloucester road!) There's a bit of something for everyone: super clubs, small alternative clubs, hundreds of pubs, lovely restaurants and cafes. Best city ever in my opinion, it's just so vibrant! The uni has a great feel as well: the campus like feeling, but in the centre of everything! I'll stop ranting about how nice Bristol is now

Well I'm from near Leeds anyway so that doesn't bother me as I ca go out there anytime I'm back home lol. I want something different  Oh well that's really good that's just what I wanted to hear thanks  I really liked the student area surrounding uni, and the accommodation set up seemed really good  my only concern was the massively high proportion of private school kids there, my dad asked a professor what the ratio was and she was pretty embarrassed about it saying that it wasn't really acceptable but she couldn't do anything about it but I'm sure I'll get used to that.
My other options are Newcastle, Nottingham and Birmingham

Haha that rant was exactly what I was looking for thank you! I really want to like it because until yesterday it was definitely going to my first choice and I'm now thinking it probably still will be as the city sounds like it's pretty much perfect really and from all the stats and stuff it seems to be pretty good for my course.

Well I am from Birmingham, so I will give it a shoutout, such a great city!!!!

There is LOADS of private schoolers but I really wouldn't let it phase you, the vast majority are lovely and you will soon get over any preconceptions you have. Also there is a big difference between private school and public school, which you soon come to realise.

Please don't turn down a great uni based on the fact it has a lot of posh people! Some of my best friends went to private school and I would never EVER have thought that would happen before I went.
Haha my family are from there and I must admit I do love it, such good shopping! I'm just not sure whether to put Birmingham or Bristol as my firm.

Yeah, well I know people from private schools at my collage cos it's a state college but is selective of people from outside the catchment. I'm just a bit scared of ending up in a corridor with all private school girls and feeling left out as I know friends that has happened to but I'm sure they were just very unlucky.

Oh well that's reassuring, coming from Wakefield (if you're in Leeds atm I'm sure you'll have heard how delightful it is) I haven't spent much time with 'posh' people lol.
