Re: Anyone from the Philippines?Beware: long ranting post ahead haha.(Original post by shyr_15)
would you ever consider living there? how did you find the culture?
I'd have to say no at the moment... last time I went over was 3 years ago, and my tagalog is actually awful. I cannot settle in a country without having some confidence in the language (or going there intentionally to learn it). I really relied on other people to speak to me in english which is kind of ironic because I hate when people go abroad and do that- but it's so hard because around Manila/tourist destinations everyone seems to speak english, even my relatively poorly educated family! Anyways...
I can't describe why I wouldn't want to live there. It seems a bit strange for me to move back to the country of my mother when the reason she moved in the first place was to escape the poverty- it's a bit like going backwards, isn't it? Plus everytime I go back I get such mixed feelings- I tend to go for a month or longer so I have this sort of escapism/homesick complex where I'm either having a great time forgetting all my problems or wanting to go home. It's alright for going on holiday and visiting relatives, but in the long term, I can't see it happening.
Having said all that, the culture: I love it! When you say culture, that includes food, right
? Favourite dish is singang (but only my mums, no one elses!) and I love eating fruit over there. And I love how everything in the Philippines is so much sweeter than in England e.g. pandesal in comparison to english bread, and skyflakes! And I enjoy filipino parties and festivals aswell.
If you're still reading this, well done lol. -

Re: Anyone from the Philippines?well, english has been a second language for filipinos. the medium of teaching in school is english so most filipinos can speak the language well. filipinos are really hospitable, they wouldn't hate you for not speaking tagalog and they would prefer solving the language barrier by speaking english...rather than let you struggle with your tagalog.(Original post by rockthecasbah)

Re: Anyone from the Philippines?
Yeah, I think yuor right in saying that the Philippines is a country of poor people. Poverty here will surely break your heart.
Anyway, Filipinos are only poor finnacially but emotionally and culturally, they are filthy rich.
Hope you can visit the Philippines again. -
Re: Anyone from the Philippines?Yeh i agree on some of the things that you commented on. I went there a couple of years ago and i am going bac there this summer. I hate the fact that i can't have proper conversations with people out there especially with my cousins, they have to talk in english to me and sometimes when i speak to them they don't understand me so i basically have to repeat myself all the time.(Original post by rockthecasbah)

Re: Anyone from the Philippines?Ha, I totally get that... like one I thought my aunt was saying that my cousin's friend had a 'crash', so I thought she'd had a car crash and died. Turns out she was saying 'crush' my cousin liked her. More pronunciation than the actual understanding, but you get my drift(Original post by emmz23)
