    Pollock catering..whats the dealio?
I'd really like to get a place in pollock halls next year, but whats the catering like?I'm a bit fussy so do you get much choice with meals? I've heard horror stories of some uni food, is it true of edinburgh?

I don't know a whole lot, but from what i've heard pollock isn't meant to be particularly gourmet, not good if you are fussy apparently, but still i'm sure it's probably not too bad

after i'd applied for pollock i found out they are not good if you're a vegetarian... so if you are, i'd go for S/C.

well the options arent bad its just the food thats rubbish! (although there isnt much choice for veggies) The food starts off not bad in september as they have lots of money but by christmas its starting to decline big style and then by summer you're lucky if you can face tea any more. However although the food isnt great if its the first time that you have been away from home big style its a good idea to go catered as it makes life sooooo much easier.

Yeah, the guy from pollock told me that as a strict vegetarian it was a very good thing that i hadn;t applied. But I'm very strict (no gelatine, non-vegetarian ice cream or red smarties for me!!), I thought you ate fish beanie? That would widen up your options a lot - plus there's always chips and jacket potatoes and sandwiches!

yeah i eat tuna, lol... i'm only veggie as i dont actually like meat, or the taste and smell of meat, but i can deal with tuna as it doesn't taste like meat... so i eat that as my mum made me still eat fish. i'm strict in the way that if i know food has got meat in i won't eat it, but i eat sweets etc as then i can't taste it

Assuming its still the same as last year every night there was pizza, chips, salad bar etc available and then a choice of 2 (sometimes 3) main meals and a couple of veggie meals. Main meals were usually served with rice, chips, mashed potatoes, roast potatoes etc
All the food is done on a points system - you have 6 points per meal and it is up to you how you spend them - some stuff is free eg dessert and some are worth more than one point so its up to you what you have

thats quite a cool system, though i can imagine you get 'chipped out' after a few weeks.

That is quite a cool system actually. Dessert is free?? I'd expect salad to be free but dessert? Wow.

Not that this is remotely relevant to me of course...

It's not a cool system. Initially you'll want to use up your 6 points. But towards the end of the year (as messy has said) it gets attrocious. It is good to be catered in the first year but I am extremely glad to have escaped that.

If anything it's motivation to brush up your own cooking skills!
