Did anyone also apply to York St. John for English with Japanese?

I made them my insurance choice as they require simply that I pass my Access course. One nice feature is that it's only a three year degree, whilst still offering the year in Japan.

The next one is in June?

The SEAS Open Days are on 13 February, 13 March and 17 April ... looking forward to meeting you on one of those days!

Hey everyone,
I submitted my UCAS application earlier, and have a query over it.
I have a JLPT N5 certificate. When looking for an option for this to put on my UCAS form, I couldn't find one. My tutor said it was fine as I'd mentioned it in my Personal Statement.
I'd just like to check if this is true? I've looked online and other people have put it under their qualifications, and I didn't know I could do this.
I'm just hoping it won't go against me; worried they'll read my PS, notice the inclusion of the JLPT, but might be unimpressed I haven't included it in qualifications.

Hey guys  I sent my UCAS off 2 weeks ago for Japanese ! Straight Japanese at Edinburgh, Chinese and Japanese at Leeds and Manchester, Japanese and IR at Leeds and Japanese and Politics at SOAS. I'm currently on a gap year to China so I really hope to be able to keep on studying Chinese at uni too

I had 2 qualifications that couldn't go in the right section on UCAS so I just asked my referee to put it in her letter  I guess that whether they read that you have it in your PS or in the qualifications section, it doesn't really matter ...

Hey all, ive applied for Japanese at Leeds, Sheffield, SOAS, Oxford Brookes and Manchester. Im currently doing an Access to HE course.
Leeds already rejected me before ive finished my exams let alone got my results. Apparently the Access course is irrelevant to Japanese, even though the course is listed as an accepted qualification on the courses entry requirements. Which is exactly why i joined the course in the first place.....nevermind. I have received a conditional from Sheffield and have had an interview with Manchester.

Did you (or any other sheffield japanese student) not meet the grades in your conditional offer? I have to get 30 credits at distinction and all my tutors have commented this is EXTREMELY hard to get, so now im worried.

Good luck to all of you applying!

Sorry for the inexcusably late reply...

I have not been able to find anyone who did not meet their grades but still did get onto the course.. HOWEVER I received replies from only a portion of my year group. I think if you're still worried about it, perhaps sending an email to the admissions coordinator at Sheffield would be helpful?

Let me know if you need any more help!

I promise to be a lot more active now, sorry again.

Hi! I was wondering what the first year modules were like for Japanese at Sheffield?
Looking at the uni website they don't mention any optional modules, only the core language ones...

Thank you!

Sorry for the incredibly late reply,

The first year extra modules for Japanese at Sheffield (i.e. non-language ones) are selected from the 1st Year East Asian Studies degree programme. You'll be encouraged to take at least a couple of Japan-related modules (i.e. not all China and Korea-related modules).

For me, I took these four extra modules: Japanese Politics, Chinese Contemporary Politics, China's Economy and Japan's Economy and Management.

I thoroughly enjoyed all of them!

Other modules included... East Asian History, History of the Koreas, Chinese Society and Culture, Environment and Society in East Asia annnnd Languages and Writing Systems of East Asia.

The latter module was said to be fantastic if you're more linguistically minded and want to delve into other East Asian languages.

If you take a look on the modules of the East Asian Studies degree programme and want to ask any more questions about them, please feel free!

I promise I'll be a lot more active in replying to your questions from now on.

Completely forgot about my post in here, so a late thank you Bambirina! No more worries about that now :P

Approximately how long does it take for Sheffield to send out offers? Sheffield Uni is one I'm massively interested in, so I'm just hoping that 1) I get an offer! and 2) if they do make an offer, I'll know in enough time before the open day I'd be invited to so I could buy cheaper travel

@SEASambassadors - What kind of option units are available in each year? I've had a look at modules for other universities, and there seems to be lots of modules (some compulsory, some optional) on Japanese literature. I can't find much on the Sheffield website, so wondered if this course also has lots of literature related modules, or shifts the focus to other areas? Or are they equally balanced throughout? Any information, as usual, is much appreciated

I've emailed my lecturer (the person in charge of admissions) to find out roughly when offers are sent out. Hopefully I'll get back to you soon about that.

I've had a look on the module choice list regarding Japanese literature and there are a couple of modules available but only in your second and third year. However, there was a Japanese literature module available in the academic year before mine. The lecturer who taught that module unfortunately took a sabbatical so it was cancelled for my year BUT I've emailed my department to find out if there any plans for new Japanese literature modules.

Sorry I can't give you concrete answers yet, but I will hopefully get some responses in the next couple of days from the SEAS department.

The other types of modules available cover subjects such as history, politics/international relations, economics, sociology/cultural studies and linguistics (all relating to East Asian countries).

If you've got any other questions, don't hesitate to ask

Thanks for that

I'm not specifically after literature related modules, so I don't mind there being few of them on offer ^_^

Thanks, hope to hear from you soon!

Sadly it wasnt. Was some confusion. The email meant my conditional offer, which was sent a while back. Annoying

Hello again,

I've heard back from the department. It seems that there aren't any planned new modules as of yet. However, new lecturers may come in the new academic year who specialise in modules currently not available. So we might get another exciting module added to the syllabus

ta well my first choice is sheffield and i got that first so made up, have just firmed today
just a quick question, when your on your year abroad in Japan can you still apply for your student maintenance grant/loans as obv cant work on the student visas or can you, any input greatly appreciated
Yup, you still get your maintenance loan AND tuition loan don't worry!

Usually you only pay half-tuition fees to your uni (this is how it works at Sheffield, I'm not sure about other uni's).

You can also apply for a variety of different scholarships, although these aren't guaranteed. The big ones are called JASSO and MEXT and these are grade-dependent.

On your year abroad you can do part-time work too so if you don't get a scholarship there's always other options
