Lawz is quite right to say, however, that most firms will have some form of non-compete covenant in the partnership deed. Alternatively, a form of enforced gardening leave which means that the outgoing partner cannot work for a new firm for a lengthy period (sometimes 6 months to a year). Whether the firm decides to enforce those provisions is a commercial decision for it to take - it may be, for example, that the firm doesn't want to burn its bridges with the departing client.
I was going to say this. My dad works in Asset Finance and has a great deal of contact with Tax Partners and the like in big City Firms. He's always talking about them going on gardening leave.
