Yes.... if you wish to go into teaching you have to take both the english and maths qts tests regardless of whether you are teaching secondary or primary.

Aw okay, thank you

Yes you do. Although the John Tyeman book is outdated it is still the best one by far. Better than the new books that are geared towards professional skills test 2013.

can you link me to that book please?

Hi I was just wondering what would be best for me.

I wouldn't mind primary teaching for a few years but I would love to be a drama teacher. How could I do this. Could I do pri course then drama after if instill want to do it? Will I need a pgce ? X

I'd like to go either Kingston or Roehampton xxx thank you x:smile:

Are you wanting to stay close to home hence those unis or are there other reasons?

If i'm honest i'd suggest attending a uni which allows you to do a subject specialism. I know winchester used to allow you to do a primary teaching degree with drama which meant you got the best of both worlds. You got to study the subject you enjoy as well as pursue becoming a teacher. If you know you want to be a teacher but also love drama this is one way to achieve this. alternatively you could do a degree in drama and then take a PGCE or apply for a graduate teaching programme (such as schools direct, teach first or scitt where you work as a teacher and train on the job).

I'm getting really stressed with the QTS numeracy skills test! I have done practice tests of DfE website and pass the literacy easy peasy!

However despite being able to do all the maths in the test, as soon as I sit down to do the practice test I fail by three marks every time!! I usually loose at least two because of running out of time (usually by the tiniest fraction of a second!!) or because my mind goes totally blank!!

I have got way over the minimum entry requirements and a mountain of experience and THIS is what is holding me down and stressing me out and I know the more stressed I get the worse it will be!

Why is it I can do the Math not a problem, but the second I sit in front of the test everything just goes out the window!! And this is only on practice tests, in an silent house, with no distractions!!

I obviously need to take my test soon, else if I fail I will be running out of time to re sit, and I HAVE to pass it to be accepted.

STRESSED is not the word for it!!

Any body have any life saving tips!?!

I have the book, followed you tube tutorials and read the advice on the DfE, but just cannot get those extra three marks!! It's so frustrating knowing I could probably get close to 100% if it wasn't for the 18 second time frame!!!
The calculator part is not a problem at all and I usually do relatively well in this part. It's the mental arithmetic driving me mad!!

Thanks in advance

If you don't mind forking out £20, Numeracy Ready (www.numeracyready.co.uk) is great, and my daughter says it definitely helped get her through the test. Among other things, they have 20 practice tests instead of the measly four on the DfE website, which is really useful.

Also, this may sound stupid but my daughter read somewhere that chocolate helps you concentrate so she had a hot chocolate immediately before her test and swears she felt much more focused, alert and confident than she did the previous time! Maybe it's psychological, but who cares as long as it works? Perhaps you could test it out at home. Other people have recommended Bach's Rescue Remedy to reduce stress levels, too.

The time limit on the mental maths is a real stumbling block for so many people because of the horrible sense of panic it induces. The more practice you have, the better it will get.

Good luck!

I'm taking my test next year. I've been trying to find revision books for the 'Professional Skills Test'. I've found a few on Amazon, but i'm not sure about which ones are good. Should I get two separate revision guides for Numeracy and Literacy or one which combines the two? Which out the list below are or is the most helpful? And does anyone know of any other good revision guides other the ones listed below?

Passing the Professional Skills Tests for Trainee Teachers and Getting into ITT By Bruce Bond, Jim Johnson, Mark Patmore, Nina Weiss, Geoff Barker (11th Januray 2013)

Passing the Numeracy Skills Test: Revised Fifth Edition (Achieving QTS Series) By Mark Patmore (21st Feburay 2013)

Passing the Literacy Skills Test (Achieving QTS Series) By Jim Johnson, Bruce Bond (22nd June 2012)

I'm going to take your word for it.
One quick question - when did you take your skills test?

Learn your timestables up to about 14. A simple tip but extremely helpful when having to multiply/divide etc in a short amount of time.

Thank you for the hot chocolate tip!! I also read that the smell of grapefruit helps. I got myself a steaming hot chocolate and some grapefruit oil and sat a new practice test (I hadn't done test 3 before, so all knew questions) ... I only went and passed it!!!!! I'm hoping this will have smashed my mental block surrounding the timing!!!
Thank you
Brilliant! Now you know that you can do it. Best of luck for the real test!
I'm passing the practice literacy tests so easily but I completely panic with the mental maths questions because I can't do long multiplication or division in 18 seconds!! I don't know how to do this!!

Just learn your times tables off by heart from 2-11 and you'll be fine. I found reciting them twice a day helped me
