What is the public perception of engineering degrees?

Do the public know what is involved in an engineering degree? Do they know it's about maths and physics and not learning how to be a mechanic? Do the public respect engineering degrees?

Joe Average isn't likely to know what an Engineering degree involves, but to be honest that goes for nearly every diploma. I'd say it's respectable, but if you want someone's respect you'll need more than just a piece of paper. :yes:

Most people think an engineering degree is what you get to become one of the guys BT sends round to connect your broadband...

I told my uncle I wanted to do either chemical or mechanical engineering.
He then said

"I think u should do chemical, its much better then carrying a toolbox everywhere"
