Please help - car mileage clock suddenly increased after purchase....

I bought a car on Sunday with 50,000 miles on the clock. After driving around in it (about 30 minutes per day since then, so only a few hours driving in total) it now has 69,000 miles on the clock!!!! I am so confused, why has this happened? It seems to be going up very quickly every time I drive it.
