I'm not sure this is a valid criticism, the maya didn't measure dates in 365 day years with a calendar like ours. They had 1 day (a kin), 20 kins (a winal), 18 winals (1 tun), 20 t'uns (one ka'tun), and 20 ka'tuns (a b'ak'tun).

This makes a b'ak'tun 144,000 days. The addition of leap years does not affect this date, and as long as the guy who extrapolated from the whole "the calendar ends on the 13th b'ak'tun" thing accounted for leap years, then the 21st Dec. 2012 number is accurate. Wasn't there a change from the Gregorian to Julian (or was it the other way round?) calendar to be accounted for, too?
