Archery?

I've always wanted to pick up archery as a hobby and went to a taster session and did quite well. The instructor even said that I should pick it up but I'm not too sure... Do you do archery? How do you find it??

What have you got to lose by trying it out some more? I've only done archery once or twice and whilst I like it, don't think I'd be very good at it. But if you enjoy it and the guy suggested you should do more, then why not - it's an awesome thing to do.

Yeah, it looks really fun to do
But then it looks like a really expensive sport as well :/ it all really boils down to it...

Can you not do some more taster sessions or find a club which allows new people to join and initially use general equipment until you know whether you're ready to invest in your own? Not sure if such places exist, but I'd hope so as it allows more people to try the sport out first.

I've been doing archery for 3 years now and got to a decentish level. I would say don't be put off if your initially not all that good, like anything else it takes a while to learn and perfect.

Archery CAN be an expensive sport to pick up, but most general clubs will have equipment for people to pracice with and clubs should also provide all of the range equipment such as targets. Club fee's can range from £30 to around £300 a year, I know my university club charges £30 and that includes membership to the General National Archery Society, insurance and equipment use, but other clubs like to perfect their training areas and can provide more in return for more finance.

My advice would be to contact a local club and go along for a few sessions. If you get into it there are quite a few good bows which won't break your bank balance. I knpow some people take the sport ultra seriously, but as a hobby archery is one of the best sports going!

I got an archery set for my nephew, it was about £30-£40 irc. A basic bow, a foam target and a few steel(?) tipped arrows is what you get. The range is about 5-10 metres so you should be ok in a good sized garden, if not then go to the park.

It's a bit harder then you think, but you soon get the hang of it. It's fun, and if you find it's not for you then it's only a few quid down the drain. If you enjoy it then you can move onto better equipment.

I got into archery a little over 5 years ago via a beginner course at a local club. I love it! There are so many friendly people in the world of archery, and as I'm a member of a club I can participate in club shoots and meet loads of other archers. I managed to shoot for my county last year which was good fun and I hope to do it again soon!
It CAN be expensive. My first bow was pretty basic and I everything came to about £100. Now I'm taking it more seriously the price has gone up quite a lot for my equipment!!! But it's worth it!
archery looks boring as **** to watch. I had to work at the archery venue for the olympics and the only people who came to watch were korean or white people who couldnt get tickets for anything else. They even offered us free tickets because the seats were always empty but nobody went to watch.

you know somethings **** when people turn down FREE ****

I shot from the age of 12 till 18, haven't shot in the last few years though.

It isn't as expensive as you would think. Most clubs will run free, or very cheap, beginner sessions. They will tend to start in a couple of months time, once the weather starts to pick up a bit, although you might be able to find a local club that runs them indoors in the winter.

After a few of them if you choose to take the sport up then you'll want to pick up your own kit. Most clubs have the most basic bows & arrows around, which are fine to learn the basics but not good enough for anything more than that.

In terms of costs, you could skimp and get a bow, bracer, chest guard, arrows, quiver, everything you need to shoot, for about £150, but doing so would mean that a few months down the line once you get better you'll need to replace some of the kit so it isn't restricting you. If you could set aside around £300 you can get some decent kit. Best bet is to find where your nearest specialist store is, go along, and they can walk you through the whole process, sizing everything up, ensuring you get the right kit for you.

It can be a horribly expensive sport if you allow it though. I've got about £4,000 worth of kit lying around in my house, although luckily a lot of that was received through sponsorship deals. So if the sport does really hook you then you can end up getting a bit obsessed!

Yes archery is quite dull to watch, even most archers I know don't really enjoy watching unless you know somebody who is competing, so I can see why most people wouldn't care about watching the sport.

Personally though I was there and I loved it, but that was because I have shot with almost every member of the GB squad, and am good friends with a couple of them.
I love archery. It's the anti-thesis to all the adrenline sports I do/did and it gives me a calm peace and concentration I can't achieve through anything else. It's like meditation, but better with pointy things.

Hi, I have done archery for since 1998 and it is the best hobby for me .

You can find the nearest clubs e.g. there http://www.sportcentral.com/en/venues/archery/united-kingdom-GB2UD60V73

I can recommend it
You have to legally do 6 hours training before joining a club though. Most sports centre's down courses for 1 hr a week for 13-14 weeks, if you do that then afterwards you can join a club
Actually, I am interested in this game. Archery is quite tough game. It contains lots of equipments like Arm guard, Arrow, Bow, Bowstring and Finger tab or shooting glove. Theses equipments are easily available on on-line sport stores.
Even my hobby is also to do archery. As we all know that practice can make us perfect. So, I dedicate all my energy and time to improve my archery skills.

Ive been an olympic recurve archer since I was seven. Its always been one omy biggest passions. It really is a great sport and im glad to see its rise in popularity. Advice for picking it up is that its a huge commitment if you take it seriously. Its expensive and time consuming in practice much like any sport but still it takes alot of dedication. Dont let me talk you out of it though. Its worth it!
