The Godfather Trilogy Appreciation Thread

The Godfather Trilogy consists of my favourite film of all time, so I felt it would be appropriate to make a thread for all Godfather fans to appreciate the masterpiece that was written by Mario Puzo and directed by Francis Coppola. From Marlon Brando to Robert De Niro to the marvelous and unforgettable Al Pacino. The Godfather Trilogy consisted of some of the greatest actors of our generation. Use this thread to discuss the films, your favourite quotes, scenes and characters. If you have any questions that you feel the books and film did not answer, feel free to post them here.

It's sensational because it's beautifully crafted and it's completely flawless down to the minutest detail. The acting is phenomenal. You can understand the undercurrents of the movies simply by the way the characters look at each other. It's a romance, a tragedy and a thriller rolled into one. The pace of the film is spot on; it conveys the gradual development of the plot and the rise and fall of the Corleone family.

It is one of the great tragedies in cinema. The brightest, smartest son of Vito Corleone descends into depravity and solitude. He alienates all who care for him and for whom he cares and by the end of Part 2 he has become a cold-hearted tyrant. The brilliance of Part 2's ending in particular is Coppola's slow zoom into Pacino's pensive expression as he sits beside Lake Tahoe and contemplates what he has done. The music stops and we have absolute silence. The audience expects and hopes for something, anything, that will indicate whether Michael feels any sort of remorse or regret, or whether he has been truly corrupted by the brutal world that he never actually wanted to become embroiled in. But Coppola gives us nothing, and we are left to wonder.

That is the brilliance and power of The Godfather trilogy and only a handful of other films can claim to come close to or match it.

Yes, please refrain from bringing up the 'part three wasn't as good as part I and II' argument. However, I think fans will welcome how you reckon the different plots and characters could have been improved. 419 I also love that quote too, the words act as an assurance that Vito will secure Fotane the role in the film, brilliant. I like the way the director wanted Don Vito's persuasiveness and power to radiate from his words so early on in the film, I also love the bit when Michael tells Kay how his father asked Fortane's bandleader to release him, and that either his brains or signature would be on the contract.
"To you, she's beautiful. For me, there's only my wife and son"- loved that quote in Part II.

What did you guys think of Michael's decision to have Fredo killed after he discovered the it was him who had helped Roth? Also why do you think Michael was so cold towards Tom in Part II?
:bump: Gotta be more Godfather fans than just me and 419:biggrin:
Who do people find better looking, Sonny or Michael?

LOL that's pretty much the reaction you would get if you told a Godfather fan that you didn't enjoy the film:biggrin:

Some great videos of deleted scenes that did not make the original cut, personally I think they are fantastic. Love how Sonny respects his father by not sitting in his chair, even though he is acting as the Don whilst his father's ill.
brb best ensemble cast ever (including dat marlon brando)

More brilliant acting from Brando, ashame this is yet another scene that ended up on the cutting room floor.

You broke my heart, Fredo. You broke my HEART.
Moving stuff, fantastic performances from all involved in the trilogy throughout. Al Pacino played his part splendidly, from the charming but cunning young man to the slightly off the rails adult, and he seemed to really mature as a character throughout.

Got into The Godfather quite young, definitely before secondary school - probably around 7 or 8. Think it shaped my taste in cinema, and I'm definitely glad I got into it when I did.

This part is one of the most epic pieces of cinema I've ever seen. :sogood:
It's not a trilogy.... :frown:
Parts I and II, I'd regard as essentially one film released in two parts. Both absolutely magnificent pieces of work and very hard to find fault with. I watch them over and over.

Part III was a cynical attempt at making money out of the franchise many years later and was very poor indeed. Watched it once; never again. Doesn't even deserve to share the same title as it's two superb forbears.

Though I agree entirely that the first two films were cinematic masterpieces, I believe Coppola had to do a third move. He could not leave it at Michael having Fredo killed and further solidifying the Corleone empire by having his enemies killed. I reckon most people would have wanted to see how the family developed and how Michael would deal with the legitimisation of the family business, granted it was not brilliantly directed or written like the other two movies.
