what's the saddest book you have read?

The third and final book in the Hunger Games trilogy (Mockingjay) is the only book that's ever come close to making me cry, I just found the ending really sad. That said, maybe not a great suggestion for a 'sad book to read' as you have to read through the best part of three books before you get to any particularly sad bits (though they are very good books!) As others have said, a lot of John Green's work is also fairly sad.
