Linguistics Dissertation HELP - calling anybody with semantics/pragmatics knowledge

My original idea was a cross-cultural study of Speech Act theory assessing the levels of indirectness in the assertion of requests with reference to politeness theory. (Think Brown and Levinson, Leech, Blum Kulka (CCSARP))

I want to change this though (for various reasons) and either look at a linguistic phenomena within the semantics/pragmatics interface OR take a different approach to Speech Act theory.

With regards to the latter, has anbody studied a different approach to SA theory - either from a semantics viewpoint (looking at illocutionary force) or a syntactic one?

I've done loads of reading but can't find much (apart from Leech) and wondering if I'm grasping at straws.

Thanks
