To the women who don't consider themselves feminists

http://www.upworthy.com/finally-a-video-for-women-who-dont-consider-themselves-feminists

I really recommend this to those women who are too afraid to use the word 'feminist' and associate it with something dirty

Why is it so important to call yourself a Feminist? What you call yourself doesn't matter it's the values you hold.
Am I the only one sick of feminism?

Like I am all for the equal rights of women. I completely agree with the original cause. But it just seems to me that it is looking and purposely trying to provoke everything against men.

What happened to equal legal status, pay and other things. It's devolved into some super hateful men are evil club, which we are not. I support the cause of equal women and equal men, I don't have to label myself, I merely support that cause.
Great video.

I think that the problem is that people commonly associate feminism only with radical feminism.

I would consider myself a feminist because I am passionate about women's rights around the world. We have it good in this country but there are still so many other places where women are treated as second-class citizens. That is why feminism is still incredibly important today.

But there are places all over the world where humans are treated as second class citizens, the poor are, certain ethnic groups are.

Why don't you staunchly advocate them rights and label yourself as a humanitarian etc?

I'm not attacking you I just don't understand this mindset.

The woman in that video is repulsively self righteous and pulls an "AMIRITE, LADIES?" face every twenty seconds. I cannot bring myself to take her at all seriously. Her whole speech is just an attempt to belittle women who don't agree with her viewpoint when these are the people she claims to want to change. Judging by the audience, though, she has clearly presented her little speech to her group of like-minded friends so that they can giggle at the strange caricature she has tried to draw. It is not in any way addressed to the group of women it claims to address and is nothing more than some kind of self-congratulatory circlejerk.

If you look at statistics regarding women in countries like Afghanistan and Congo you will see that feminism is still very much needed.

How about them places get fixed from the ground structure up first to prolong the equality of all people rather than having them the way they are and trying to promote women's rights alone which will just be rejected because of the incumbent system.

Posting some video of a western girl on the internet trying to be self-righteous and quite frankly doing absolutely nothing isn't going to sort out their problems.

Isn't it cool to be part of the 'in' crowd?

It's not about standing on a chair and shouting I'm a feminist in a Caitlin Moran-esque style, but it's about not saying 'I'm not a feminist' like being a feminist is something outrageous and disgusting. In a way it's about reclaiming the word and getting rid of the negative connotations associated with it that have been brought on by the more radical branch.

So is it about advocating women's rights or reclaiming the word? This video, this thread, labelling yourself changes nothing.

If I go out tomorrow telling people I'm a socialist, will the welfare state increase? No. If I tell them I'm a Christian, will belief in God increase? Unlikely.

See where this is going?

The first step do doing something is to acknowledge the fact that there is something wrong with the society which a large number of men and women are failing to do, which I believe she is trying to do.
You may think that like the woman in the video I'm just some 'western girl' on the internet doing nothing, but I'm currently raising money to aid women in Congo. Appearances aren't everything you know.

I feel like I keep repeating myself I think I literally just answered your question in reply to someone else haha
I love feminists. I am grateful for all they have done and continue to do so for LGBT liberation.

Oh and this quote is so relevant to this thread:

Let me have a moment here with those of you who have no idea the price your First and Second Wave Sisters paid so you could enjoy the benefits of saying you are not a feminist. Need I remind you that less than 40 years ago a woman could not get a credit card unless her husband cosigned for it. It has been less than 30 years since women have been admitted to graduate programs sister, someone cleared that path for you and paid dearly for it... Do the right thing at your next gig, your next gallery show, your next art house screening, your next rock opera premier, the birth of your baby, or at the b’ris of your son and raise your fist, your glass, or your voice to the women who cut a swathe through this jungle for us so we could saunter along in their clear path and dare to say we aren’t feminists.

Don't you think people are aware? We know people in Congo having it rough, acknowledging issues with a name that is usually applicable to one group in society fixes nothing. It just isolates.

I don't think she is, I mean really, the time spent on that video, with them people, why isn't it spent taking action. Congratulations, what about the men and small children struggling? Are they not as important? Do they not deserve their rights? Appearances aren't but telling me you're raising money doesn't change my opinion of that girl, in fact, it isn't even linked!

Why aren't you a humanitarian? Why aren't you raising money to change the system, build a system, help a system?

I'm genuinely looking for a yes or no answer to those questions...
I totally totally agree.

Feminism is always being confused with radical so-called 'feminism', and it drives me crazy! All I want is for the world to treat me as an equal being!

A friend raised the issue with me the other day of labelling it 'feminism' - why not 'equality'? I obviously want equal rights for all, and perhaps if it were to be re-labelled, 'feminism' might not be the perfect choice as it does seem to reflect a desire for female supremacy, but I don't think that small issue should be used to undermine the cause.

When I say that I'm a feminist and various people tell me that I'm being ridiculous and asking for a difficult life by wanting more than I already have in terms of equality, it drives me insane! I literally couldn't believe it when my friend's sister, who is a supposedly independently minded Durham graduate, said this to me. If another who's only extra qualification is a penis is being paid more than me, then of course I'm going to be angry! There is no justice in that! And I fear that those who share my feelings on the issue, but don't want to label themselves a feminist can only damage the cause. If you believe in it but aren't willing to use the accepted name for it, you're only making it more of a taboo, and encouraging the rest of the world to continue holding their false beliefs that the issue has been dealt with, and it really has not! It's so disheartening to have people look at you like a nutter when all you're saying is that you also want what they've been too sheepish to label.

Why not call a spade a spade?

If I like pasta why would I not say I like pasta?
If I am for women's rights equal to men why would I not call myself a feminist?
Because of the negative connotations and stereotypes attached to the word through the use of mass propaganda that has resulting in this reluctance.

Because it admits defeat to how successfully the word has been tarnished and the masses have been brainwashed. You have to decode this whole other fox news induced language before you can even converse.
Feminism for the last ****ing time is not about equality. It is about womens rights.

Feminists do not give a **** about. Male body image. Male sexuality. Men getting longer sentences than women. Men not getting access to their children. Men being drafted. The lower levels of funding for male healthcare.

I honestly don't have any problem with feminism as a groups for women's rights but god does it piss me off when this self interested pressure group disguises its self interest under the name of "equality".

Feminism is essentially a movement for white women outraged that they do not have the privileges of white men. Their elitist, narrow-minded cultural and political biases are well documented, which is why I do not have a lot of time for them.
