If you want an honest answer, I think that's madness! If you drive yourself it might be okay but if you would need to go by public transport you are talking about 1,5 to 2 hour bus ridesat least (just one way) with 2 different bus companies probably. Money wise this could cost you like 5 pounds a day at least. On the other hand, I assume your aunt wouldn't charge you for staying there so you would save a lot with living costs.

Either way, I would strongly advice you to stay either on campus or around Hatfield - even if it was just for the uni experience.. you are bound to make new friends and it will be more difficult to do stuff if you live so far away.

Oh and, Pop_tart, I forgot to quote you! Couldn't work out how too!
I just asked a question above i think
So need to work out how to use this site!

    Hey!
I know you've answered questions similar far too many times, buuut, wanted to know if you could help me out with choosing accommodation?
Basically, I have a Conditional offer to study Paramedic Science at herts I actually live in Hatfield but reaaalllyy want to stay in halls to get the full experience (I know, It sounds silly, but yaaaah)
I want to stay in the College Lane campus as thats where my course is
Quite alot of my course is spent in Placements in North London doing some night shifts so maybe Telford isn't the place to be? Although i reallly liked them when i saw them. At the same time though, i don't want to stay in "quiet halls" if there is such a thing! I didn't like the mini house halls? Not sure what they're called, But when i loooked around i hated them :/ I saw them and Telford court.

I want to meet lots of people, Preferably staying in a "flat" with more then say 3 people.. I've heard some are like that?
With like a kitchen and a communal room? Do some have that?
God, I sound so fussy! Sorry

    I guess i don't really know!
What do you think? Any advise?
As far as budget is concerned, My parents have said there fine with any halls appart from De Hav

    Sorrry that's so long!
Thank you so much for any help!
    Hey there!

No worries about the not quoting in this one

Not silly at all! ^^ I always advice people to stay on campus for a year even if you are from the area! Although staying home probably saves you quite a bit of money, nothing can make up for the experience of living in halls amongst other students.

It would probably be easiest for you to just stay on College Lane, although there are free shuttle busses. All the little houses are called Roberts Way (phase I & II) - They are usually shared with 8 people. From the sounds of it Telford Court would be best one to go for. Telford Court is sort of seen as the 'party' flat although you shouldn't take it that literally (it's not like the whole flat parties 24/7) - most outgoing people seem to go for that one, so it's definately not quiet. If you go to my profile and then click on the photo album (college lane) the first few photos (except for the first one) are all from Telford court.

Since you are in hatfield you could easily go on campus to have a look at them all again if you are not a 100% sure

If you got anymore questions or need anymore helpe/advice just let me know!!

I'm at Roberts Way Phase II. The guys and girls over there are quite friendly, but still feel quite lonely over here.

I stayed in Roberts Way as well in my first year and I kind of know what you mean. I think you need a bit of luck, some might all get really close and others might hardly see their other housemates. I got put in with loads of international students and didn't really connect with any of them. That doesn't mean you can't have a good time though!

Well, I'm an international student myself, but find the local students in my house very friendly. And true, it's the international students who are hard to connect with. Hopefully, I'll get the luck you are talking about.

I really don't want to seem silly/stupid but I'm not really sure on this thing.

I'm thinking of going to either De Hav or Telford. I'm doing a business course, so my lectures will be on De Hav.

I looked at the Herts website and prices for De Hav are £113. Am I right in thinking of this?

    113 x 4/5 weeks then multiply that by 12.

    So 113 x 4 weeks = 452

    then 452 x 12 Months = 5,424.

Is that how is works? Is that what I'll be paying yearly if I choose De Hav.

    Please reply.

You don't actually stay in halls for 12 months.
    Your contract will be for 38 weeks, so £113.40 x 38 = £4309.20
so that's what it will cost you to stay at de Hav for semester A and B.

Speaking in the third person are we

You can download an application form for the accommodation online. Just go onto the herts website and have a look in the accommodation section.

Im probably not going to be that helpful but for all thinking of choosing De Hav because of the en-suite i've got a few tips before you hastily choose! First of all, I personally think that rooms are bigger on college lane(they're more square shaped whereas DeHav rooms are quite long). Also, college lane is where it's at in terms of any decent nightlife (there's Watford and St.Albans but for all the best Student Union stuff college lane is where its all at) so living on college lane is definitely a benefit, especially because you have to catch a shuttle bus from each campus and the last one is at 3, meaning after a night out in the Forum you cant really go to a house party or anything as you've got to get on that last bus! Also, DeHav is stricter than College Lane. Parties get shut down so quickly! Everytime i'm over there it's just a very nice quiet place.. whereas College Lane is a little rougher but more is going on. So don't make your choice just because of the en-suite; I know a lot of friends that have regretted both choosing to live there and pay the high cost.

Thanks for your input, I think it was very helpful and I think you make a lot of valid points. I guess it all depends on what you are looking for though I think you are very right in saying that people are to hastily to choose de hav just for the en-suite. In my experience, sharing really is as bad as what you think, I mean I came from a family from where there were always 5 of us so I never thought it was an issue to share really. People think of like the absolute worst case scenarios like if you had a person that is really filthy, that just rarely happens.

I'm not such a party person myself really so hardly ever went to the forum to be honest. Even if you miss the last bus, it's only a 20 minute walk from College lane to De hav - I made the walk many times in my first year and never had any problems with that to be honest.

De hav is definitely stricter, security is a lot tighter but in my experience they don't necessarily stop parties quicker. If someone complains, security has to respond to it. As long as you don't hold a party that is too crazy and loud you can have a great time untill the early hours.

What the rooms are concerned, I agree that college lane room seem to be a bit bigger because they are more square shaped rather like the ones in de hav but I must I much prefer the way de hav rooms look - they are much lighter and the desk is great but that's just a person preference

I posted this in the other thread, but basically I only just realized that the course I changed to is actually on College Lane, whereas I only looked at De Havilland when I went to the open day.

Can anyone who's seen the campus recommend the best accommodation? (I'm just looking for typical Uni halls.)

I currently live on de hav and my course is on college lane. Most people in my halls have their lectures on college lane, it really hasn't made much of a difference, there is a free bus shuttle that comes every 8-15 minutes, and even then you can take the short walk to the other campus.
De Hav obviously has the advantage of the ensuite but it depends how much you want to pay for accommodation to where you want to stay, I suggest going on the universities website as they have virtual tours of some of the different types of rooms.
    Hope this helps

Have you seen any of the College Lane accommodation yourself? (I was thinking of applying to Telford Court or Roberts Way)

The travelling doesn't really bother me, although I would find it easier to be able to walk to lectures.

Yes, I have been to butler Halls and telford court, they are both similar but i think that Bulter Halls have bigger kitchens and more people living in the halls. Telford court had about 6-8 people living in the flat i saw, the rooms are bigger than the ones on de Hav as they are more squarish. I would suggest going on the university website and looking at the virtual tour.
The bathrooms on college lane are all shared but you have a sink in your room. I have not seen Roberts way sorry but I remember it from an open day and I didnt particularly like it but that might just be me. You do see a difference for what you pay and Roberts Way is the cheapest accommodation.

Thanks for the information, I think I'll probably choose de hav as my first choice anyway. I looked at the virtual tour before but you can only see a Telford Court room.
