What documents do you need for student finance?

Is it just standard N.I number (yours + parents), passport?

I wouldn't need a full birth certificate or anything right? (I only have a short one)

if you have a passport you wont need your birth certificate. your parents may be requested to provide evidence of wages

Currently mine has also expired, but i'm going to get it renewed anyway - just to be sure. It will also be cool then for 10 years or so
