A semi mech-eng checking in here

What is the preferred CAD package in industry?

In my experience, the big two in automotive are CATIA and ProE. Solidworks is another popular package. I personally have a preference to Autodesk products. You can get a fully functional copy of any of software on a student license, and the user interfaces are just so much clearer than ProE.

A thing to remember also is, there are CAD packages such as AutoCAD which are purely for producing a "shape". As an engineer you really want something like Inventor which allows you to run Finite Element Analysis and Dynamic Analysis. As engineers you're not just looking to produce a shape, you need the tools to "engineer and optimise" your designs.

I worked at a company which produced sand castings of prototype, high end production and motorsport automotive parts such as cylinder blocks and heads  I got to do a bit of everything and learned a lot. The best part was getting to go to 8 Mile Rd, Detroit :biggrin:

My placement was in the UK. I was just sent over to Detroit for a week to sort out a problem with some NASCAR parts.

Yeah all paid for!! Went out to some really posh restaurants (amazingly there are some really nice parts of Detroit!) which served the biggest steaks I've ever seen  .
I'm at Portsmouth Uni, due to finish in June:smile: It was really good in my first year but it's gone down hill a lot. I was actually meant to do an MEng, but I'm just going to cash it in at BEng and do a postgrad masters elsewhere.

Damn sorry to hear that what caused you to dislike your later years? xD
That's pretty awesome to get to go to Detroit via your summer placement. I managed to get to Shetland once, which isn't particularly glamorous, but one day I did only ten minute's work and got paid a full day's wages, so I was happy.

Just the way the departments heading to be honest... The quality of the course just seems to be slipping away. They made a lot of the lab staff redundant in my second year, and there are no optional units until the masters year any more (its obviously cheaper for them to run less modules).
Also I want to specialize towards metallurgy, and an MEng isn't really a "specialist" masters. It's a bit of everything rather than a lot of one thing. I'm applying to study an MRes at Birmingham now so fingers crossed I get onto that !!

It was actually a sandwich year, rather than a summer placement

Basically to oversee something as the company needed someone onsite to sign the paperwork. Was nothing challenging but was good to get out of the office and see real stuff.

Currently study Mech Eng at city of Glasgow college HNC year, so my plan is finish HNC then HND then go into 3rd year at Glasgow Caledonian Uni. (My college has an agreement that a completion of HNC & HND, will get me into 3rd year at Cali)

Really enjoying it so far, anyone doing HNC mech eng too?

How long is an HNC and HND? Just curious but what are the requirements(ie do you need a levels to do one) to be able to do both?
