woww.. im so glad i came across this thread. i had been so confused with my uni options the last 1 mnth.i got offers from exeter, reading, surrey, till now. waiting for manchester and cranfield also.
bt now i thinki ill be firming surrey as i dont see any reason to not accept the unconditional offer.
i would like to know about the part time jobs that an msc retail management student can do to meet daily expenses?
and also if u know anything about the retail management course and students
thanksss Jonnyishman u were of great help!!

Hiya
Retail management is a part of the business school which means some of your lectures will have students doing tourism, hospitality, business, accounting too

About work, you can always try to find jobs at union, and restaurants... But honestly competition is huge!

Local retail shops, McDonalds and other take away are also offering weekend, part time jobs. Everything depends on your ability to be able to sell yourself.

What's the shared showers like? What's the whole system? Would you recommend it?

So showers (and bathrooms) are shared in bands A, B and C; the other bands are all en-suite rooms. Depending on the band you're in, you'll be sharing the shower with a different number of people, but for example in Cathedral court you share 2 showers, and 2 toilers between the 7 of you on the floor, and in Battersea court you share 3 or 4 showers between up to 14.

It sounds a bit chaotic, but in the two years I lived in shared bathroom flats, I never had to wait for the shower, not even once. Everyone's on different schedules and timetables, so it's rare for there to be lots of people needing to shower at the same time.

They're cleaned every other day, as is the kitchen and the hallways (basically all shared areas of the flat). Generally people keep them clean, it's not like a public toilet where anyone can use it and make a mess, the only people using them will be living there, so obviously they won't want to make a mess of it.

Personally I'd recommend it, the extra £20 or £30 a week definitely makes up for the 10 second walk down the corridor to the bathroom. But it depends what people want, having the en-suite may be more important to you than it is to me.

I'm a local, who goes to a different university.

I was basically just wondering, I never see Surrey uni students out on the town. I've concluded I either just coincidentally never bump into them, they have a whole other nightlife world on different days that I just don't know about, or they never go out (or have campus bars/clubs that they go to).

Can any current student or graduate help clarify this? Students like to go clubbing, at least every once in a while, I'm just baffled as to where/when they go?

(Guildford nightlife has a certain reputation, you see. I've handled it for months and months, but being at uni myself has just made it intolerable, you see. Would be nice to go out when some other students might be out).

My flatmates go out quite a lot and usually go to Casino in town. I think it depends on where they live. Most people living on campus would just go to Rubix (the Union on campus) so you wouldn't see them whereas Manor Park (off campus accommodation) people seem to think I'm going out, might as well go the whole way and go out in town. My flatmates tend to go out on friday nights, they've only gone on a saturday once and that was for a birthday last week.

There's a few bars on campus as well so that's probably where most of the Surrey students are but I do know that my flatmates prefer town.
Hi there,
I've recently accepted my offer to study Veterinary Medicine and Science at Surrey this September.

I am curious as to whether anyone knows if you're allowed non-student visitors in your flat? And if they're allowed to stay over the odd night?

I have seen several replies on various threads on the Surrey forum saying that technically they say no visitors in flats after 11pm, and that this isn't checked upon at all, unless there was someone barging in on you at 1am every night, and considering they're going to expect the alcohol-fueled unexpected bedroom occupancies, I doubt they'll be checking! The rule is just there, I presume so they have a reason to kick people out if there's trouble or they find someone living on someone's floor for free.

But I've not seen anything about non-students visiting? Can anyone help?

You seem to have understood it pretty well.

The rule is there, but it's not enforced. Trying to tell students that they can't have anyone stay over in their rooms would be completely unenforcable!

Unless you've got someone living with you all the time, to the point that it starts to annoy your flatmates and somebody complains, then you'll be fine.

That is exactly what the rule is for. Applies to both students and non-students. One of my flatmates had her boyfriend from home stay with her for a week last term. No one said anything, the only reason security would have to check a room is if someone complained.

They don't do spot checks. Apart from during the fire alarms in freshers week, they went into everyone's rooms checking they didn't have anything against the rules like candles. They also checked the names of everyone who evacuated and we got an email saying they'd 'discovered several instances of dual occupancy which have been dealt with' so probably best to avoid any sleepovers until your block's fire alarm test is over.

Current students, I was wondering if any of you guys/girls got in with a BTEC. How lenient are the university with these sort things?

How far away are the local supermarkets?
Does anyone have a job at say Thorpe Park/Chessington because they are nearish but a little far away, just wondered if anyone commutes that far for part time work?
Is there actually a good chance at finding part time work at Surrey? If so how do you go about it? Do you wait until you arrive, or do you apply before you leave?

Hi th13teen,

Just realised nobody got back to you.

The closest supermarket is a fairly massive, 24 hour tescos. You can see the distance on google maps but it's about a 5-10 minute walk depending which end of campus you live on. There's a couple of smaller supermarkets in the town centre but they're further away than the tescos would be.

I never knew anybody who worked at one of the theme parks but I don't see why you wouldn't do as long as you didn't mind the commute.

I found part part time work pretty easy to get while I was at Surrey and I don't know many people who struggled too badly to get a part time job they didn't mind. My advice would be to wait until you get to Surrey and apply for one of the campus jobs. They advertise them in the first couple of weeks every year. Most commonly it will be working for the union, on the bars and the like. You can also become a student ambassador once you get to learn the campus a bit. Some departments will also hire students to give tours to visitors and potential applicants and visitors, similar to what an ambassador may do but more focus on your particular course. Those jobs are good for occasional work without having to commit all of your weekends if that's what you're after.

If you're after something a little more regular then lots of students will work in the town. Either at bars in the evenings or in shops during the day if they don't have that many contact hours with their course. If you want to find a high street job then coming early will only help as you'll be beating all the other new students. But as I said I never knew anyone who struggled too badly to find work, it depends if you get lucky and what kind of job you're after and the kind of hours you're prepared to work.

Hope that helped.
Hey Jonny, can you please tell me how far is the Surrey Sports Park from Stag Hill and is the gym nice?

Hmmm I don't know what u mean by many, but we have Islamic SOC which is big, and 95% of girls there are hijabi. We had one hijabi at my course. I know nursing, medicine related courses have a lot.

In general hijabis are nor rear in uni. At the same time it is not overloaded at the same time.

Do you know anyone that commuted from London, and if so did they struggle doing so?
And would you consider Surrey as a safe area?

Surrey is very safe. That was one of the reasons why I chose Surrey. Very quite and nice place. Actually that is one of the reasons why some people don't like Surrey, they say night life is boring and limited in comparison with London. For u I guess its a benefit

Yeah, few of my friends including my best friend were commuters from London. Ofc no one can deny lost time during the travel, but its bearable. They survived, and never left behind. I guess for u it will be easier assuming u r not drinking and partying hard.

The only thing comes in my mind is, most of the society meeting are after 6 and weekends (bakery, cooking, volunteering, sports activities), u might miss most of it, especially if u finish your lecture at 2 and SOC meeting is at 6.30.

Basically, tbh with you, u will miss social aspects unless u r truely dedicated. But just commuting 40 mins on train is nothing.

I myself lived at home and commuted 30 mins.
