Without having access to the university's official statistics (which they're quite unlikely to just give out), giving an accurate answer is pretty much impossible.

All I can tell you is that Surrey is well known for being a very highly multicultural university, so if that's something you like, then Surrey will probably be a good bet.

Are there many hijabis at Surrey?

First year student going into my second in September - A lot of people seem to be worried about Surrey not being very diverse. I'm a British Pakistani Muslim and from what I have experienced, Surrey is very diverse and you will find people from different cultures and religions..

To answer the question: In my friendship group there are quite a few and I always see some around

Is it common for ALOT of people to usually get there first choices?

Surrey is very safe. That was one of the reasons why I chose Surrey. Very quite and nice place. Actually that is one of the reasons why some people don't like Surrey, they say night life is boring and limited in comparison with London. For u I guess its a benefit

Yeah, few of my friends including my best friend were commuters from London. Ofc no one can deny lost time during the travel, but its bearable. They survived, and never left behind. I guess for u it will be easier assuming u r not drinking and partying hard.

The only thing comes in my mind is, most of the society meeting are after 6 and weekends (bakery, cooking, volunteering, sports activities), u might miss most of it, especially if u finish your lecture at 2 and SOC meeting is at 6.30.

Basically, tbh with you, u will miss social aspects unless u r truely dedicated. But just commuting 40 mins on train is nothing.

I myself lived at home and commuted 30 mins.

Thank you again for letting me know and reassuring me, as I was quite close to changing universities through either clearing/adjustment because I though it wasn't diverse enough etc.

I don't think I met anyone who didn't get at least their 2nd choice of accommodation, although I expect there were a very small number.

IME maybe 75-90% their first choice and almost everyone gets at least second.
Recently, I put in my application for accommodation putting band C as my first and I got it a day later. My friend did it too around the same time and put Band C as his fifth preference and got it. So it depends largely on the availability. Of course since we are applying now means we do not get the pick of the litter unfortunately!

Google Surrey accommodation as soon as possible and sign up for the accommodation. They will not send an email around reminding you. If you have already done so, they should reply fairly quickly. I got my reply less than a day after I applied listing my court, building and cost as well as payment schedules.

They also sent a welcome email today, if you didn't receive it, just google surrey welcome week and there's a good chance it will come up.

Wait until fresher's week to see all the different societies. You can find a full list online. I plan on joining rowing

I'll be starting at Surrey this September on the electronic engineering course. I don't have a laptop. Should I get one? Do most people have their own laptops? What are the universities computers like? I have a really good desktop machine so would it be worth bringing that instead? Also I like the look of the chromebooks.

Hi, I'm just about to start second year of EE at surrey. Most people on the course do have their own laptops, but it's not essential to have one. The University has good computing facilities, and you will find that often you will have to use Uni computers for the specialist software anyway.

One thing to bear in mind is that it can be more convenient to have your own computer so that you don't have to rely on Uni facilities being available, but to be honest, as long as you aren't a complete train wreck with organisation you should be fine either way.

Library computers are available 24 hours a day in the week, it only closes on Saturday or Sunday night (can't remember which). You can also get swipe access to the buildings so you'll be able to access FEPS (Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences) computer labs which have all the software you will need on.

Don't fret about getting one, but if you have the money to spare it might make your life a little bit easier.

Good luck!

There are hundreds of societies that you can sign up to. At the end of freshers week there will be a massive marquee set up where most of the societies will have reps to tell you about the soc (look for me at the sub aqua club!). The language courses are called GGA (global graduate award) and are a great thing to do, but be aware that it's a fairly large workload on top of your degree.
So when sharing a kitchen in Battersea for example with so many other people, how do you deal with all those dishes? LOL

The size of the kitchens vary based on the number of people in the flat. So a flat with only 7 people in it will have a smaller kitchen than a flat with 14 people. There's enough space that (in most occasions at least) you won't need to worry if people have left their dishes lying around.
This has probably been asked already, but what is the likelihood that someone would regret not buying a freshers wristband? I'd like to spend time with new people, but given I don't know them yet, I won't know if they are planning on going to all the events.

It's generally a safe bet to assume that the majority of freshers will be aiming to go to the events during fresher's week.

If you think you'd like going to the events, then it's probably a good idea to get a wristband.
