Criminal record

I was recently filling in an application form and it said:

Have you had any criminal convictions? (Under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, you are not obliged to disclose spent convictions.)

Not that I have a criminal record but I thought its compulsory to state your full history?

For most jobs you're not meant to disclose spent convictions, presumably so that if you did something minor many years ago, it won't harm the chances of employment for the rest of your life.

However there are some jobs that do require spent convictions (or even more information than that) such as in law or working with vulnerable adults or children.
