Advice on Nottingham?

Hey

I'm planning on applying to Nottingham (obviously not for the 2013-14 entry ) for the Law LLB course. I love the University, the course, and the campus is amazing...BUT. I know someone very close who went there (I think to study Engineering), and she feels that now it's kind of hard to find employment. They don't seem to find a Nottingham graduate very appealing...

If you are currently a student at Notts, can you please give your opinion on the uni? And if you've gained a degree from there, can you please describe how you've found the reputation of the uni to be like so far?

Thank you so much!

No one? Pretty please? It'd be really helpful, even if you just type a one word answer...

Hiya, I'm a 1st Year at Nottingham.

Hard to find employment? Nottingham is 6th for Law. Every year, a law fair is held, almost one hundred institutions try to persuade you to apply for graduate schemes - everything from Barclays Wealth and Deloitte to Linklaters. There are endless career events throughout the year - to be honest, I don't think you'll have a problem getting a job at the end of your degree, if you graduate with a 1st or 2:1.

Oh, really? I knew that they held a law fair every year, but I didn't realise how popular it would be for large firms. I suppose now I just have to worry about getting a really good degree...
Well, that's one definite university down! I'll be applying for entry in 2014, so I still have a few months to root around for more information. The hard part is that I don't live in England right now, so I can't visit until the open days in the summer holidays, although I am originally from the UK so at least I'm aware of the distances and reputation of the cities and all that. Most of my classmates have no idea
Can I ask what you are currently studying then? Oh! and also, are the rooms ok? From what I've heard, they're relatively clean and most rooms aren't too cramped for space, and it's quite easy to make good friends in fresher's week (Cavendish). Confirm?
(Completely bugging you for information )

I graduated from Nottingham in 2003 with a 2:1 MEng. Since I came back from my gap year in November 2004, I have been in constant employment, except for a 2 month spell June-August 2011.

To be honest, never in an interview have I discussed my degree - course, grade or instituion - with the exception of my masters dissertation project. Degree is just one line a CV after all. It's a good line to have, believe me, but you need to fill the rest of the CV with something.

Hi, sorry to hijack but do you happen to know if the rumors out there about 55% of Nottingham law graduates getting 2:1 or better is true? Also, how far is it from broadgate park to the law building?

This is true for any university graduate regardless of where they graduated from. I highly doubt that it is anything to do with how Nottingham is viewed by employers.

It's not 20 minutes. You'd have to walk a snails pace to do it in 20 minutes. It's no more than 10 max.

(It's so near, no hopper buses serve BGP)

•The ten universities most-often targeted by Britain’s top graduate employers in
2012-2013 are Warwick, Nottingham, Manchester, Cambridge, Bristol, Durham,
Oxford, Birmingham, Bath and Leeds

I think a lot of International Students stay in BGP, but not all. But do what YOU want to do, not what everyone else is doing.

I just want to point out that Nottingham has produced the 13th highest number of CEOs in the world (in leading companies), which ties it with Stanford University and is the second highest number for a British university after Oxford. It is also usually ranked in the top 15 best universities in the world from employers perspective.
Anecdotes are not always very accurate.

I was thinking of staying in catered halls.. But after working out the additional costs needed during the vacations, doesn't seem quite worth it. And it's pretty much a hassle if I have to keep shifting rooms.. Guess I will probably accept BGP!

Oh...wow, that's a pretty good track record to be honest.
Was university really not that big of a deal during your interviews? My teachers are always droning on about how we should carefully consider extracurriculars and things such as that, but if we don't put effort into our grade - now or later - we're probably not going to find ourselves moving forward quite so fast :s-smilie:
Well, one teacher at least.
You did a master's degree then? I suppose you found the professors and lecturers to be alright?

Oh, thanks! I know that it's a lot to do with how well you do in the interviews, and how much you manage to convince them that you can actually do the job properly, but I still get little moments of anxiety. There's a couple of months before we even start the application process, and a year to the exams, but it's all rushing up so fast! I feel like I blinked, and suddenly I'm not one of those year 7 kids that don't have to worry much about school and that everyone gingerly brushes past in the hallways...I want my life back!

Thank you! I've never been able to find one of these things for 2013...
It's interesting how the London unis have moved a little down the list, and that Oxford is currently below Nottingham and Warwick. Hmm.

Oh, I wanted to do psychology! It was also one of the options for IB (if you're a UK student then it's A-levels for you ), but I figured that it would probably be best to stick to the basics and not attempt then completely fail something new. I might try to get some books on it though...
I do have a question/s! Firstly, are the halls alright? I have a 'bit' of emetophobia (basically sick), so I'll be that person who hardly drinks and escorts their friends bock to their rooms and dumping them in the bathroom before running as fast as possible away :frown:. Most people do manage to make it to more private areas before they...right?
Second, how do you find the teaching? I've heard that there are some pretty good lecturers there, though across the different subjects. True?
