Hi I'm resitting core 1 and I've just completely forgotten why you would want to complete the square and when would you have to use it?

Because life just isn't worth living if you don't complete the square.

You want to complete the square because

(x \pm b)^2 \geq 0

so completing the square can give you information about the minimum of a quadratic function.
