GDL Application and Training Contract

I am a third year PPE student at the University of York and I am looking into going into corporate law. I am just wondering if anyone can help me with regards to my GDL application.
Essentially I am just wondering whether, if you are applying for firm training contracts, where you have to apply and obtain a place on a law college for a GDL place beforehand?
