How long does it take to get a referral letter?

Hey, so after various blood tests and xrays my GP diagnosed me with arthritis and is referring me to a rheumatologist. This was about 2 weeks ago.

I was just wondering how long it takes to get a letter for an appointment? I know actually getting an appointment can take months but when will they send the letter telling me about the appointment?

I want to find out sooner rather than later so I know the letter hasn't been lost or anything like that. I'm also in my final year at uni so I might be back home if my appointments not going to be a while so I'd have to change hospitals and stuff.

When I had to have lasertherapy and acupuncture on my neck and back, it took a fair amount of time for the referral letter to come through... I can't remember exactly but certainly a few weeks. There's nothing to be lost in asking your GP when he thinks you might get an appointment, he might have a vague estimation.
