PhD at Imperial, how tough to get in?

Hi

Well, I'm an overseas, Msc in engineering from an average uni in UK. How tough would be to get a funded PhD there?

Thanks.

if "overseas" means "non-EU" then you probably won't be eligible for EPSRC funding unless you were living in the UK for 3 years before the start of your degree. Therefore you would need to either self-fund (perhaps being funded by your home government) or apply for one of the handful of scholarships available for international students, which are very competitive.

If you are EU then you can apply for an EPSRC funded PhD, which will still be competitive. Whether you get accepted depends on many things including your field and the rest of the applicant pool, but to have a good chance you would ideally have a first (perhaps a 2:1 if its from Oxbridge or Imperial) and have done a strong final year research project. If you have a 2:1 from from an average university then realistically you aren't going to have a great shot, but you might get lucky and there's no harm in applying. It may be worthwhile applying to a top university for a masters instead since getting a distinction would make you a stronger candidate, but this is expensive.
