Right guys. Firstly Congratulations on getting an offer an Nottingham Trent and De Montford! Just to let you know this perspective is coming from a Nottingham Trent Univerisity student currently studying 1st year.
I had a look at the De Montford website. (I actually had no idea they existed and did design crafts) And looked at the video of what they have to offer. I'll give you my perspective from what I can see from the other university website.
I found that the De Montford website doesn't really concentrate on the contemporary side to design (contemporary meaning modern up to date, or the future) The facilities they showed in the video looked great but found they only concentrated really on ceramics and glass-blowing in the video (probably to make it more impressive)
As a Nottingham Trent student I feel that the facilities at the university are just as good as De Montford and we concentrate on all the materials listed on the De Montford website such as ceramics, metalwork, textiles, glass, wood. The extra materials we provide but De Montford doesn't is print and paper (yes you can create some amazing work from paper!)
Also the fee's are cheaper at Trent being £8,500 compared to De Montford £9,000. Most students here also get a scholarship (depending on your parents income) and get the fee's for £7,100. Which is a great bonus.
Also one of you guys was wondering what the nightlife is like in Nottingham. I can tell you it's amazing! Freshers week you really get a taste of the nightlife and meet some amazing people that might even be your friends for life! They're also socials on Wedneday where everyone dresses up in a different theme (Smurfs and life guards are hilarious) and is real great fun.
Also halls at Nottingham are really close by the the campus (Bonington campus being the place where you do decorative arts!) there are several halls literally next door which is great for walking into the city centre and only a 5 minute walk to your lectures (after that night out you'll be thankful it's so close by!) They're Sandby Halls, Gill street, Hampden Halls and currently there are new halls being built so even more access and availability!
Back to the Decorative Arts degree you also visit Johnson-tiles in first year and get a taste of what the industry is like and also get a project from them. This year we worked in a group to create two contemporary tiles that would work in a bathroom. Hard to say but the group we were in came first and we got £50 each to spend in the universities art shop! Yippee!
After that connection is made with the industry we've had people done work experience their over the summer.
People who also want to specialise in glass can also go to Sweden and take a year out and get a taste of the different culture and learn new skills and make new friends!
Around Nottingham itself has plenty of companies that work in contemporary design and craft and there's plenty of opportunities for work experience.
Apart from the degree there is plenty to get involved with in the university such as societies and clubs you can join.
I hope I haven't gone on too much but I hope this helps.
Again at the end of the day it's personal preference where you go and where-ever you pick you'll know it's the right place and for you.
Good luck!
Becky
