Telling a FWB I want more...

So been sleeping with my best friend for nearly a year now, want to tell him that I want more...
but
how do I actually do that... I'm scared of coming across as clingy or something.
I'm in a similar situation. Was with him for about 5 months, broke up because he wasn't ready, gradually drifted back together and for the last year we've been FWB.

But now I want it to change, he's always said he's "happy how it is" when I've brought it up before (he's got a daughter and is scared his ex will make life hard for him). I don't want him to feel that I'm forcing him to choose between me and his daughter, I know he will choose his daughter over me! But next time we talk about it I think I'm just going to tell him I'm not happy how it is.

I know how you feel, it feels like I'm taking a risk that could end very badly!

Ask him out on a date to the cinema or something, see what he says?

Be like 'oh I really want to see this film, can you come with me?'
