Changing course after clearing?

If someone were to get in to a university via clearing to study subject A and decide later (but still before university starts) that they would prefer to study subject B as they're more suited to that subject - is it possible to change courses if they meet the entry requirements for course B, but course B wasn't in the clearing process?
Possible but unlikely because the fact that course B wasn't in clearing means it didn't have any spaces? However, it is also possible to change subjects after you get to a university - but again, that depends on resources...

I believe if course B is at the same university that you have got into through clearing then there is a possibility, but you would have to contact the university directly to ask for a change.
It would also depend on whether there are spaces left on the course that you want to change to.
If the course isn't in clearing it's likely it would be full.

If you already think that you want to change course wouldn't it just be better to apply through clearing for the right course or is this because you want to go to a specific university?

This is the sort of thing you'd do through the uni itself. I know a few people that either changed their course after a year or dropped out of one half of a joint honours - all done through their advisors in their department. If they have space you might be able to, provided the subjects are fairly similar (ie not swapping from comp lit to medical sciences).
