Physiotherapy Applicants 2014

This may be a little early but hey it's always good to be eager.

Um a little bit about me. I'm a 20 year old mature student (at least I will be when I start) that is currently doing an A Level in Biology (and Chemistry) in order to get a place to do Physiotherapy in 2014. (I already have 5 other A Levels so no I won't be applying with just two for anyone that's wondering.)
I currently work in a pharmacy which I hope will look good because although it's a different area it's still in the healthcare sector, and I intend to try and get work experience around my actual job before I apply.

So far I'm looking at Kings, Liverpool, Nottingham, Brunel, Southampton, Brighton, UEA, Birmingham, and Cardiff.

I'm really excited about applying and hopefully being able to get onto a course. The only slight concern I have is that I'm a petite 5"3 and I'm a little concerned about how much physical strength will be required.

How about everyone else? Anyone else applying or thinking of applying? Where are you looking? Any concerns?

Thought i'll start this thread early lol.
Post what your currently studying or going to start in september and what uni you are aiming to study physiotherapy in.

Im a semi mature student (22 lol) have a previous degree in OT but I've always wanted to do Physio so I'm starting a fast track Biology A-Level in september and will be re-applying for Physiotherapy.

Nervous but looking forward to the next year

Hi there,

I'm also a mature student (23. 24 by the time of uni) I'm starting an access course in September then hopefully going to progress on to uni next year to study Physiotherapy! I've currently been getting placements within physiotherapist settings etc which is really helpful and gives you a good insight to the profession and obviously will boost your chances of getting an interview as most if not all universities require some form of work experience!

Universities I'm looking at are Liverpool, Brunel, Southampton, Plymouth, Huddersfield, Oxford Brookes, Keele, Cumbria, Leeds Met, MMU, Teeside. Quite a few as you can see! Just need to narrow them down.

I have no concerns really, though I know it's going to be hard work as the course is very demanding. But hard work pays off right? I don't think your issue will be a problem to be fair but its probably worth reading what the course entails on the university website or just giving the uni a call and enquire.

Good luck with your application when it's time to apply!

Massive amounts of physical strength is not required, Manual Handling is all about technique and is always done with two or more people for legal and safety reasons. Manipulation and Massage do acquire a certain amount of physical strength, however this generally comes with practice, the majority of the Manipulations and Massage you will be doing however are mostly to do with technique as well.

You'll be fine. Good luck for next year!

Manual handling can be done with just yourself or a whole room of people. There are no legal requirements here. Manipulation you won't be doing as an undergrad, or if you do, it will certainly be very supervised. I did a small amount in my final placement in outpatients, but never on a patient, just on my educator/other physios. The gist is correct though, you don't need huge strength to be a physio.

Hi there,

I'm applying for Physiotherapy 2014. I've already finished Year 13, with A levels in Chemistry, Physics and Maths, and I'm going back to my school to do Biology in a year in September. I've done the whole UCAS thing before, as I applied for Pharmacy this year, but after some more work experience in a hospital ward after I'd applied, I decided I want to do something much much more patient focused and hands on, so Physiotherapy it is!

I've got work experience lined up this summer at my local hospital, and I'm also going to India for a month next summer to do some voluntary work related to Physio. Hoping to find some more experience before September

I'm looking at Birmingham, Cardiff, Keele, UEA, Kings, St George's, and either Southampton or Sheffield Hallam depending on how my A level grades go this year.

Does anyone have anything they could tell me about the courses/application process at Kings or George's, as I can only get to their campus tours rather than open days. Particularly Kings, as there's a suspicious lack of information anywhere on here!

Thanks!

Hi

I'm currently a Physio Assistant with NHS working full time in orthopaedics and am planning on applying to Essex Uni to do a part time degree. I can hopefully work and study although I know this will be a massive undertaking as work colleagues are managing to work and study but its not easy. 1 colleague has just finished his first year part time degree, 2 colleagues are starting their masters in september and another colleague is starting the part time degree, so I have lots of people to go to with help with my personal statement !!

I am mid way through an access course which with working, studying and raising a small son means I am ultra organised and committed, something I hope the accessors take into account when reading my application !

Good luck with applications and interviews when they happen everyone X

I have my place for Teesside 2014 confirmed.

I've been through the stresses of applying including 3 interviews and know about the competition for places so if anyone has any Q's I'd be happy to help.

I have a confirmed place for St Georges for September 2014 and Kings was my insurance choice. They are both really good choices. I am a mature student, 33, and there seemed to be more mature students at St Georges. I also liked the hospital setting and it had an excellent feel about it. Everyone was really positive and struggled when I asked them to tell me one thing that wasnt so good or that theyd change. Interviews are changing this year and I think its going to be tougher.

Kings focuses a lot more on the academic than the practical to begin with and some of the placements are in the holiday periods. They would be particularly good if you like to know all the theory in detail. They have specialists in each area lecturing so anatomy will have an anatomy scholar who can give groundbreaking research.

Is there anything specific you would like to know?

I did an access course if anyone has questions about that too.

Oh and if anyone is applying to Southampton make sure you include reference to at least the two weeks work experience they require in your personal statement to get consideration

Thanks for the info, but I've actually ruled them out, since visiting!

I quite liked George's course, but I think I'd go stir crazy in the uni. Wasn't keen that the whole place was literally in the same building. Whereas I loved King's as a place, but not the course, for the reasons you've just listed! Definitely learn by doing for me. Also I had a lot of doubts about being able to afford London.

And I got AAB this year, so it's just a waste of a choice putting Southampton down for me really.

Did you apply anywhere else?

Totally get where you are coming from re George's you either love or hate the set up for me it was one of the big plus points. Good that you got to look round.

I applied for Oxford Brooke's and Bournemouth as well. I was looking to not move too far from Southampton where I live at the moment. What have you narrowed your choices to?

UEA, Birmingham, Keele, Sheffield Hallam and Cardiff  UEA is my top choice at the moment, it was my firm this year and I'd love to still go!

I don't know much about UEA but you need to follow your heart. Did you miss your grades this year or have a change of heart about your course? Good luck for this year.

The latter. I withdrew my application about May this year. It was so odd on results day seeing the grades I needed for my old course but realising I wasn't going anywhere haha. Thanks
