Other Medical University Courses available?

Hey TSR,

Currently I'm in year 12 and studying hard for my final AS exams. I'm aware that very soon I'm going to have to apply for university, and although my career ambitions throughout my whole life has been to become a doctor, I feel like I should do some research around what other medical professions are available, too.

I have thought about Pharmacy (not Pharmacology as my teacher recommended) and possible Psychiatry too. What other professions are there which would mean I would study a different degree to medicine in university?

Can anybody suggest a good place to begin research? The whole application process is daunting and I'm not sure whether to begin by looking at universities or...?

Thanks for your time!

I'd just like to point out that Psychiatry is a speciality under Medicine, i.e. you study Medicine and then specialise in Psychiatry.

There's also Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Biomed, BioSci, etc... I'd suggest getting a couple of prospectuses from universities you are interested in and having a look at the science section. Also, a lot these courses aren't vocational and it's recommended to get at least an MA to get a 'good job'. Prospectuses are also online on the universities' website.

Also, since you're going into Year 13 (I think that's the same as 6th year in Scotland, judging by what you said about your ASs), if you're still considering Medicine, I'd start applying for work experience ASAP to do during study leave/summer and some volunteering jobs too.

If you need any more help, feel free to PM me

Good luck on your application!
